Great value: Glenelly Estate Reserve Red 2015

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Glenelly was acquired in 2003 by Madame May-Éliane de Lencquesaing – the former owner of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac, Bordeaux. May set out to transform the property into one of the finest in Stellenbosch and the Glenelly Estate Reserve from the iconic 2015 Stellenbosch vintage clearly expresses this vision.

From a selection of their finest vineyards, the 2015 Estate Reserve is a nod to the classic, 19th-century blend in which Syrah was added to traditional Bordeaux varieties. This 5-way blend is 'structured, stylish, intense, with plenty of vibrancy and ageing potential' according to Tim Atkin MW. Finely crafted, it will offer great drinking over the next decade at a remarkable, sub-R300 price.

A Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot-driven blend, its grit and graphite definition are beautifully balanced out by the succulent richness from the 15% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 2015 release perfectly sums up the phenomenal growing season of the vintage.

Tasting notes

Glenelly, Estate Reserve Red 2015

'Exquisite blend 4 Bordeaux varieties, mostly cab & merlot (35/30) plus usual telling syrah (15%) giving leather, dark spice & black pepper notes to deeply satisfying 2015. Dark berries & crushed herbs, cigarbox perfume from French oak, 31% new. Like 2014 (5 stars, 95 pts), savoury, ageworthy.'Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)

'Were it not for the presence of 15% Syrah in the mix, this would be a four-way Bordeaux blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with 10% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Structured, stylish, intense, with plenty of vibrancy and ageing potential, layers of plum, mulberry and blackcurrant leaf flavours, some fresh herbs and fine, granular tannins. Drink 2022-27.'Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 94/100
