We’re kicking off this week’s highlights with the first fine wine event of the year: an incredible five-course dinner in Cape Town with Sauternes royalty, Château d’Yquem. Another high note is Krug’s newest Grande Cuvée, the 171ème Edition, which remains one of the greatest Champagnes in the world! The 2022 Three Quarters Shiraz from CWG Protégé Mahalia Kotjane has been all the talk lately, while Emilio Lustau’s Manzanilla Sherry is among our favourite thirst-quenchers at the office. For the love of texture, look to the 95-point El Bandito Skin 2023 from Testalonga, and we conclude our selection with the Terre Nere Calderara Sottana 2020, where Italian tannins meet Burgundian styling.

Krug Grande Cuvée 171ème Edition NV

Krug’s 171ème Edition is made up of 131 wines from 12 different vintages, spanning 2000 to 2015. Due to the warm and dry nature of the 2015 vintage, Cellar Master Julie Cavil specifically focused on reserves from three of our favourite modern vintages – 2008, 2013 and 2014. These were cooler vintages, producing energetic, delineated wines that bring great vibrancy to the newest iteration of Krug’s Grande Cuvée. It’s composed of 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier, all barrel-fermented, as always.

Three Quarters Shiraz 2022

The latest exciting young winemaker to watch has just released her maiden wine, and we’re seriously impressed. Three Quarters Shiraz 2022 is made by Mahalia Kotjane – CWG Protégé and previously winemaker at Lievland Vineyards. This Shiraz is aromatically enticing with notes of rose petal and strawberry wrapped in nutmeg and white pepper spice. The tannins are fine and the wine is ‘entirely charming’, remarks Christian Eedes. Be among the first in the world to try it!
