‘Dry Riesling is one of the wine world’s undervalued treasures,’ says Jancis Robinson, and the grape’s versatility with food goes unmatched. The 2022 small-batch Riesling from Moya Meaker is electric and reminiscent of an Alsatian Riesling, with aromas of lemon curd, elderflower, and white peach. The palate follows with intensity and a driving acidity, giving way to a long, chalky finish.
Established in 2010 by Canadian-born David Curl, the former owner of Château Gaby in Bordeaux, this Elgin property lies in an amphitheatre formed by various mountains. From high-density, high-altitude Elgin vineyards planted in 2010 in Bokkeveld shale, Moya Meaker has the perfect terroir for Pinot Noir. The grapes were destemmed and whole-berry fermented, resulting in a soft, pure fruit extraction. Named after David Curl's mother-in-law, who was Miss SA in 1959, the Moya Meaker brand and wines celebrate her radiance and lively persona.
