Serious fun: Going the whole hog with Spider Pig

'Fun on the outside, and serious on the inside.'Dave Wibberley, Spider Pig

Dear *|FNAME|*,

While wine can sometimes seem exclusive and unapproachable, these fine bottles of 'swine' from the Spider Pig pen are all about inclusion and fun. At Wine Cellar wine excellence comes first and, crucially, these are all delicious, excellent quality wines offering 'pig-ture' perfect terroir expression.

Since 2015, the Spider Pig team have been collaborating with some of SA's rockstar winemakers, including the likes of Duncan Savage, Christo le Riche, Stephanie Wiid and Tremayne Smith to name but a few. We think this is their most refined set to date.

While certainly not boar-ing, these are purposefully crafted fine wines and with 'sow' many reasons to enjoy them, go on and have some fun. Buy the pack as is, or 'pig' and mix as you wish.

Kicking off the selection, the 2020 YAY ol' Pig Old Vine Cinsault is fresh and crunchy with pretty fruit. Light in style (only 12.5% alc.), it has nuanced, backward fruit supported by juicy, pure deliciousness on the palate.

Taking its cue from the past success of the Cape's heritage blend, the impressive 2020 Black Pig Old School Blend is 60% Cinsault with classic Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon. It combines great perfume and delicate fruit expression with a precise palate that is detailed and delineated.

The 2020 Roaming Pig, with its Rhône aspirations, is a blend of 50% Piekenierskloof Grenache, 40% Swartland Syrah and 10% Stellenbosch Cinsault. It is taut with attractive, reductive notes and shy, backward fruit. There is a hint of whole-bunch spice that leads on to a bright, vivacious palate.

Made by Duncan Savage, the 3-D Pig 2020 Red Blend is a Bordeaux-style red. While it has proper gravitas, it is elegant and offers some serious drinking from a masterful winemaker.

The Pigs Back 2020 Pinot Noir is a quintessential Elgin Pinot with brooding, dark, plummy fruit, a good tannin grip and a fresh, spicy lift from the 10% whole-bunch. A whiff of quality French oak (25% new) from the Chassin, Gillet and François Frères 300L barrels, rounds out this classy glass of wine.

Finally, The Red Hog 2020 Swartland Syrah is a spot-on, classic Swartland Syrah with clean, pure fruit concentration and crushed stone minerality that follows on to a dark, juicy palate with some real seriousness. There is a quiet power to this wine the captures the revolutionary Swartland spirit.

Tasting notes

Spider Pig, YAY ol' Pig Old Vine Cinsaut 2020

'YAY ol' Pig is an ode to the remarkable old Cinsaut vineyards responsible for this very bottle of glory juice. Much like the revival of vintage vinyl records, this wine has been made to help _turn the turntables_ on the view that our heritage should stay in the past. Sometimes, old is gold. And these old vines continue to produce the hits.'Spider Pig

Spider Pig, The Roaming Pig Red Blend 2020

'Roaming Pigs are fondly recognised for their abilities to find delightful treats buried away all over the country side like treasure. Grenache from on sandstone soil on top of Piekenierskloof. Syrah from granitic outcrop in Stellenbosch Cinsaut from shale in the Swartland. Our classical layout that received a South African Design Award, lends itself to the notion that while some stay at home, we are out Roaming for opportunity.'Spider Pig

Spider Pig, The Pigs Back Pinot Noir 2020

''On the Pigs Back' is basically an Irish saying for doing really well, really really well. Who's up for a Piggy Back ride then? Put your arms and hands around this bottle, hold tight and enjoy the ride down the flavour slide. Produced from Elgin fruit delivering the essence of what a great Pinot should represent. Bringing Piggy Pinot back.'Spider Pig

Spider Pig, The Red Hog Swartland Syrah 2020

'Always go the whole hog and in that similar fashion we ride the red ocean of a revolution in producing our first 100% Swartland wine. The Red Hog Swartland Syrah allows a full expression Red Bearded Pig who would like to scoff out of his trough.'Spider Pig

Spider Pig, 3-D Pig Red Blend 2018

'A 3-Dimensional Red Blend is simply taking three important components of the nuance to a great recipe for wine: A great Winemaker – Duncan Savage, a colourful Marketing contribution – Dave Wibbs and then cherry topping it with an instrumental Sales Arm – Dave Nel. Then adding massive doses of this to the mix and let it waft away into existence. Inspired by 3D superhero comics and a lust for a good time, this wine was made in accolade of one of Spider Pigs partners David.W, who has a strong wind towards Bordeaux varieties. The remanence of Red and Blue are in recognition of the original 3D-glasses used in the movies and comic books.'Spider Pig

Spider Pig, The Black Pig Old School Blend 2020

'The Black Pig rounds out the Piggy stable*. This wine brings all the boys and girls to the yard. And their life is better than yours. Damn right, it's better than yours. It's made from one of the world's greatest vinous treasures, Cabernet Sauvignon. Cab Sauv is practically everyone's cup of tea for a glass of wine. Combine this majestic swan with a lick of the CINSATION and we present to you the special, the inimitable BLACK PIG. * Stables are for horses, not pigs.'Spider Pig
