Terrazas de los Andes: High-altitude Malbec from Argentina

'Now is the time to buy Argentine Malbec' – Wine Enthusiast

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Malbec is among the most reliable reds you can find and consistently offers great bang for your buck. From a winery built in 1898 and vineyards planted almost a century ago, we bring you one of the best value Malbecs available – Terrazas de los Andes Malbec Reserva 2019.

This 2019 Reserva is sourced from 100 parcels in the Lujan de Cuyo and Uco valleys in Mendoza. The 20 to 80-year-old vines grow at 1070m to 1250m above sea level. These high-altitude vineyards are at the very extremes for ripening Malbec, allowing for remarkable acidities and wines with purity, freshness and finesse. According to founder Hervé Birnie-Scott, their climate is ‘like Champagne, but with sun’.

Terrazas de los Andes Malbec Reserva 2019

2019 saw cooler temperatures and dry weather, which produced smaller berries and lower yields. The resulting 2019 wine is youthful and energetic; elegant but concentrated. It shows graphite, savoury herbs, floral notes and an earthy minerality, boasting a dense black core, fresh acidity, and dry tobacco with a flinty finish.

When Hervé Birnie-Scott first planted here in 1993 he was known as ‘el loco Francés’ (‘the crazy Frenchman’) for growing vines at such high altitudes and in such a marginal climate. His team's hard work paid off and Terrazas de los Andes was established in 1996. Nowadays the Uco Valley is one the most celebrated regions in Mendoza, Argentina. Their focus is on the vineyards, with minimal intervention in the cellar.

Tasting notes

Terrazas de los Andes Malbec Reserva 2019

'The deep crimson hue and bright rim allude to the youthfulness of the 2019. The nose shows dark, vibrant cherry and plum fruit, tucked behind tobacco and earthy aromas, which follow through to the palate. There is a sense of restraint as the bold fruit treads a line of mineral intensity.' – Kenny Nassen
