R85 'value wine of the week', Jamet, Kalmoesfontein Chenin & classic Beaujolais

Dear *|FNAME|*,

This week, we're highlighting Leeuwenkuil's 2021 Chenin for its sheer punching-above-its-weight, bang-for-you-buck value. While we're on the Swartland Chenin train, we've included the Dalkeith Kalmoesfontein – a small-batch gem from a lauded Paardeberg postcode. Wine Advocate says how 'savvy consumers know not to overlook the excellent white wines' of Domaine Jamet, including the Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc. And, with cooler weather on its way, we're enjoying the Gamays from Château Thivin: 'A historic estate that continues to rank among the reference points for classical, age-worthy cru Beaujolais,' writes Wine Advocate. Finally, we're rounding up the highlights from last week's very successful vintage wines tasting with the last remaining bottles.

Leeuwenkuil, Chenin Blanc 2021
R 85 per bottle | Value wine of the week

'For the money, this is really very impressive indeed,' writes Greg Sherwood MW with a score of 92+/100, 'as I discovered recently, the style of the 2021 Chenin Blanc is far more serious than previous vintages.' With such high praise coupled with the fact that this is now the last of the 2021 vintage, this perennial Wine Cellar favourite is well-worth stocking up on. Get some while you can!

Jamet, Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc 2019
R 525 per bottle

One of the leading producers in the Northern Rhône, Domaine Jamet makes classic, pure fruited and attractive wines. Their rare 2019 Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc (a selection of the finest Marsanne and Viognier parcels in Ampuis) is a no-brainer! Showcasing layers of tropical and stone fruit, the coating palate is pierced with herbs and a vibrant acidity for a fresh, but full finish. Pair it with a lemon butter roast chicken.

Dalkeith, Kalmoesfontein Chenin Blanc 2019
R 285 per bottle | Maiden release

This is a superb interpretation of old-vine Swartland Chenin from high-flying winemaker, Graham Weerts. This limited maiden release has 'layers of flavour' writes Christian Eedes. The fruit is sourced from a parcel of 50-year-old vines on the now-famous Kalmoesfontein farm beneath the Paardeberg, which produces some of SA's most highly-rated, old-vine Chenins! Grab a bottle – or six.

Thivin, Brouilly Reverdon 2019
R 380 per bottle

As a team, we love exploring lighter-style reds that boast structure and effortless power. This 2019 Brouilly Reverdon Beaujolais ticks all the boxes! Offering succulent red and black cherries mingled with earthy spices and fine-grained tannins, it'll keep pulling you back into the glass. This is a great introduction to this historical estate which Wine Advocate underpins for their 'classical and age-worthy' cru Beaujolais.

Vintage wines: Tasting review
From R 1,400 per bottle

SA's vintage wine space has seen tremendous growth of late and our recent vintage tastings in Cape Town and Joburg confirmed why. The Alto Cab 1978, Kanonkop Cab 1973 (Kanonkop's first Cab release), Meerlust Cab 1978, Zonnebloem Cab 1972 and Lanzerac Cab 1968 were all in fine form. Kanonkop's 1973 still has incredible weight and well-defined tannins. It's a remarkable wine that will grow in stature among collectors in years to come. Lanzerac's 1968 showed pure, red fruit and soft tannins (not often found in great Bordeaux from the '60s). The KWV Muscadel 1930 and Monis Collector's Port 1948 both possess astonishing depth, clarity of fruit and layers of complexity. These wines are wonderful expressions of our vinous past and we recommend you take some of these, and other available vintages, while they still offer value compared to wines of similar quality from Europe.
