Delectable Spanish red from Torre de Oña – ‘Spanish wine is on fire’

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Torre de Oña is among Rioja Alavesa’s most exciting projects. With Alejandro López at the helm, one of Decanter’s 'Top 10 Best Revelation Winemakers', this boutique bodega is one to keep your eye on! Their pure Tempranillo yet again blew us away at our Rioja tasting last week with its classic sweet and savoury complexity and delicious drinkability – packing a punch at only R265 per bottle. There’s no doubt that ‘Spanish wine is on fire’ (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous).

The 2019 Torre de Oña Finca San Martín Crianza is seamless in its makeup, treading a fine line between tradition and modernity. Boasting deep red fruit, spicy nuances and well-integrated, succulent tannins, it’s an exceptional introduction to their house-style.

The Finca San Martín Crianza is raised from limestone soils at the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains in Rioja’s smallest sub-region. Aged for 16 months in American and French barrels, and two years in bottle, it speaks to the pedigree of the La Rioja Alta stable. The seductive sweet and savoury notes complement grilled meats and vegetable stews, and it’s the perfect addition to your ‘Braai Day’ selection. But buy it by the caseload as one bottle won’t be enough!

In 1890, five Basque wine-growing families banded together to start La Rioja Alta, and in 1995 they bought Torre de Oña. The bodega continues to showcase the outstanding quality the Spanish wine capital has to offer.

Tasting notes

Torre de Oña Finca San Martín Crianza 2019

‘The 2019 Finca San Martín is pure Tempranillo from the younger vines on richer soils, the grapes not used for Martelo that deliver rounder and fruitier wines. It fermented in stainless steel for 14 days with a slow malolactic of 74 days and matured in 60% new American oak barrels and 40% second-use French oak barrels for 16 months. It's round and fruity, with juicy fruit, round tannins and a gentle mouthfeel. It was bottled in September 2021.’Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 91+/100
