New tastings: The rise of Sauvignon Blanc, Northern Rhône vs SA Syrah, vintage wines & Piedmont 2017s

Dear *|FNAME|*,

With 2022 in full swing, we are excited to launch our new tasting line-up! We'll start by taking a deep dive into 15 years of Sauvignon Blanc (old and new), and then we'll compare Northern Rhône to our own Syrah superstars. Come and explore the fascinating world of SA's vintage wines and ports, and then 'travel' to Italy for the highly-anticipated, just-landed wines from Piedmont.

Explore 15 years of Sauvignon Blanc – R 425

Cape Town: Wed, 16 Feb, Wine Cellar Observatory

Johannesburg: Wed, 23 Feb, Dunkeld West Centre

Sauvignon Blanc is South Africa's favourite white wine and new releases sell out fast. But do we drink these wines too young? Whilst ageing Sauvignon Blanc is not a common practice in South Africa, we believe it should be. With their impressive acidity, freshness and purity of fruit, these whites can age up to 30 years and still be alive and fresh. Come and join us as we explore 15 years of South African Sauvignon Blanc from the likes of Constantia, Elgin, Stellenbosch, and even some Sancerre.

Syrah: From South Africa to the Northern Rhône – R 600

Cape Town: Wed, 2 Mar, Wine Cellar Observatory

Johannesburg: Thurs, 3 Mar, Dunkeld West Centre

The Northern Rhône is undoubtedly the home of benchmark Syrah, however, South Africa's top Syrahs have been clipping at the Rhône's heels in recent years. What defines Northern Rhône Syrah and what characteristics do our local Syrahs show? Join us for one of our most popular tastings as we put a few of the most exhilarating South African Syrahs from the Paardeberg to Polkadraai up against the Northern Rhône's giants – such as Jamet, Clape and Chapoutier. Can they hold their own against these French masters?

Vintage Stellenbosch and fortified wines review – R 1,250

Cape Town: Wed, 16 Mar, Wine Cellar Observatory

Johannesburg: Thurs, 17 Mar, Dunkeld West Centre

The South African vintage wine space has seen tremendous growth over the past couple of years, and well-stored wines from our past are increasingly rare and expensive. Lanzerac from the '60s and Kanonkop, Meerlust and Zonnebloem from the '70s are considered some of our finest wines from the previous century. Similarly, fortified wines have the ability to age because of their higher residual sugar and alcohol levels. Come taste some fortifieds from as far back as 1930 and find out how the older-vintage reds fare against one another and their current-release counterparts.

Piedmont: New vintages from one of Italy's most famous regions – R 575

Cape Town: Wed, 23 Mar, Wine Cellar Observatory

Johannesburg: Thurs, 24 Mar, Dunkeld West Centre

'Piedmont is the fine wine region to watch,' writes Decanter. See why Piedmont's star keeps on rising and join us as we taste through the 2017 Barolos and Barbarescos, as well as 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera and more! We will feature wines from the region's top families, including Marengo, GD Vajra, Baudana, Giulia Negri, Pio Cesare, and the world's best co-operative – Produttori del Barbaresco.

Highlighting benchmark producers across each region, we will taste 12-15 wines at each event and delve into the latest trends and wine culture. As per usual, these are sit-down tastings, presented in an educational but casual and entertaining manner. The tastings will start promptly at 6 pm and end at 7:30 pm and, unless otherwise stated, will be hosted at Wine Cellar Observatory, Cape Town and in Dunkeld, Johannesburg. We look forward to tasting with you once again!
