Trimbach – the world’s most admired dry Riesling

Dear *|FNAME|*,

For 400 years, family-run Domaine Trimbach has been crafting ‘the single most admired dry Riesling made anywhere’, according to Jancis Robinson. Today, they’ve solidified their position as ‘the most famous Riesling estate in all of Alsace’, continues Wine Advocate.

Trimbach is known for their bone-dry and electric, structured Riesling, and the Trimbach Riesling Réserve 2020 speaks of the quality and authenticity of the property. It’s produced from mostly low-yielding old vines on limestone soils around Ribeauvillé. The warm 2020 vintage shaped wines of amazing concentration and complexity marked by a driving acidity, which will allow the Réserve to age gracefully for decades. If you can’t wait, the softer Riesling 2020 offers earlier drinking.

Founded in 1626, thirteen generations of the Trimbach family have promoted Alsace and its history throughout the centuries. Trimbach’s proven track record shines through two of their top cuvées – Clos Ste Hune and Frédéric Emile.

We’ve acquired a small parcel of the rare and iconic Clos Ste Hune 2017. From Rosacker, a single cru dominated by limestone clay, this is quintessential Riesling, with Robert Parker asserting that it’s the ‘finest produced in France, and can rival any Riesling produced in the world’. Another of the house’s famous Rieslings is the Frédéric Emile 2014. Hailing from the Grands Crus of Geisberg and Osterberg, it’s a mineral expression of the vineyards’ limestone terroir. Like all of Trimbach’s top wines, it’s released with a minimum of 5 years’ bottle age.

Tasting notes

Trimbach, Riesling Réserve 2020

'The Reserve’s quality comes from a rigorous selection of fully ripe grapes from the Ribeauvillé region. 5, 6 plots with marl-limestone soils, old vines of over 45 years on average, this elegant Riesling is dry, precise, with a marked acidity characteristic of coin de Ribeauvillé.'Winemaker

The 2020 vintage has not yet been rated. See the note below for the 2019 vintage.
‘Very youthful, unformed nose. I suspect this will be much more expressive in a year or two, although in time it did open out a bit in the glass to some Riesling steeliness. Real nerve and excitement on the palate. Still very youthful and tight but all the ingredients, plus enormous extract, are there.’ Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16++/20

Trimbach, Riesling 2020

‘Its delicate bouquet, beautiful balance, dry character, distinguished fruitiness and natural liveliness contribute to its exceptional richness. As required by the house style, it is vinified dry, straight, and precise, every year.’Winemaker

The 2020 vintage has not yet been rated. See the note below for the 2018 vintage.
‘Slight reduction still shows on the nose of this wine, but promises freshness. The palate comes in with uncommon brightness and slenderness for 2018 and seems to make a show of its uncompromising tartness, but there is concentration galore. The finish is dry and all about zesty citrus.’Anne Krebiehl MW, Wine Enthusiast, 92/100

Trimbach, Clos Ste Hune 2017

‘Highly aromatic on the nose, revealing hints of pear, lime, white pepper, candied ginger, quince and even raspberry. Enters sweet, then turns more austere and piercing. The penetrating, long, very suave finish offers complex, concentrated flavors similar to the aromas. That rare note of raspberry repeats in the mouth. A readier-to-drink CSH than usual, but it will age well. The Clos has been organically farmed since eight years ago, and I while I am very careful about making blanket statements on this subject, I think that the wines are now even better than they were before. Whether it’s the organic farming or not, I don’t know, but the possible connection is intriguing, to say the least. 2025-2035’ – Ian D’Agata, Vinous, 96/100

Trimbach, Frédéric Emile 2014

‘So much mineral and sliced apple character with hints of orange and apple peel. Turns to steely character. Full-bodied, racy and bright. So lively. Great finish. Drink or hold on release.’James Suckling, 96/100
