New wine tastings: Spot the 100-pointers, Pinot Noir benchmarks & complex, light-footed reds

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Wine Cellar is beyond excited to be able to celebrate local wines and welcome you back to our tasting rooms! Over the last 5-10 years, local fine wines have seen extraordinary growth in quality, affirming their position amongst the benchmarks of the wine world. At each event, we will taste 12-15 wines and celebrate local terroirs and producers (with some imports added to the mix). As per usual, these are sit-down tastings presented in an educational but casual and entertaining format.

Please note, all tastings will start at 18h00 and end promptly at 19h30 and will be hosted at Wine Cellar Observatory, Cape Town and in Dunkeld, Johannesburg.

We look forward to tasting (safely) with you once again!

Perfect score: Spot the 100-pointers – R 1,250

Cape Town: Wed, 25 Aug at 18h00, Wine Cellar Observatory

Johannesburg: Wed, 1 Sept at 18h00, Dunkeld West Centre

‘South Africa is making the greatest wines in its history,’ says Tim Atkin MW, having dished out two perfect scores last year to the 2018 Porseleinberg and the 2019 Sadie Family Skurfberg, and another in 2019 to the 2015 Kanonkop Paul Sauer. 100-pointers are always raved about but can you spot them in a line-up? Put your palate to the test and join us for the rare opportunity to taste some perfect-scoring wines against an array of other world-class examples. One night only!

Light reds: Know your Cinsault from your Pinot(age)? – R 550

Cape Town: Wed, 8 Sept at 18h00, Wine Cellar Observatory

Johannesburg: Wed, 15 Sept at 18h00, Dunkeld West Centre

Back in the day, bigger reds were considered better. Over the past decade though, the spotlight has shifted to lighter reds. While lighter in colour, are they lighter in flavour and complexity? Join us as we explore this exciting category. From the super approachable, fruit-driven reds of Beaujolais; and energetic Sicilian reds from the volcanic soils of Mt. Etna, to local Cinsault, Grenache and more!

SA Pinot Noir vs. the world – R 675

Johannesburg: Thurs, 16 Sept at 18h00, Dunkeld West Centre

Cape Town: Wed, 22 Sept at 18h00, Wine Cellar Observatory

Having had his fair share of ‘rare and expensive Grand Cru Burgundy and First Growths’, Neal Martin unhesitatingly states that the best of SA punches at the same weight. Join us as we taste how SA’s finest Pinot Noirs – including Storm and Crystallum – fare against other top Pinot Noirs from around the world.
