Vergelegen's resurgence is palpable in their latest releases. To illustrate the quality and stature of these wines, we're highlighting their long-awaited 2015 Vergelegen Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2019 Vergelegen GVB White – one of the finest wines in their stable.
The South African 'Bordeaux White' category produces South Africa's finest, long-living whites. These Sémillon Sauvignon Blanc blends age gracefully for 8 – 10 years and beyond. They are a particular style, requiring a few years in bottle to showcase their complexity, and are incredible food wines. The 2019 Vergelegen GVB White is simply stunning.
Alongside the 2017s, Stellenbosch's 2015 Cabernets are regarded as the best of the last decade, if not the modern era. There are diminishing opportunities to acquire some of the greatest releases from this vintage. The 2015 Vergelegen Reserve Cabernet is one such opportunity.
Vergelegen highlights
Few properties have as much pedigree and potential as Vergelegen – the darlings of the local wine scene in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. Subsequently, André van Rensburg convinced the owners, Anglo, to embark on a complete replanting program. After this labour of love, the estate now has 120+ hectares under virus-free, mature vineyards. The 2015 Vergelegen Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the result of this dedication. Classic in style with fine, quality tannins it is set to mature for decades to come. Vergelegen is back!
The 2019 Vergelegen GVB White blew us away with its fruit purity, wonderful array of stone fruit and notes of white flowers. On the palate you'll find an exceptionally well-balanced package of detail and power. It is really impressive.
