Northern Rhône: Value from the masters of Syrah

Dear *|FNAME|*,

The undisputed masters of Syrah – Jamet, Clape, Graillot and Chapoutier – have all been instrumental in moving the Northern Rhône from subsistence farming towards becoming one of the greatest wine regions in the world. Today, we're highlighting 5 great wines from these legendary, appellation-defining producers.

The 2019 Jamet Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge (100% Syrah) and the rare 2019 Jamet Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc (Marsanne, Viognier, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc) are wines made for earlier drinking pleasure but offer immense ageing ability. The 2018 Clape Cornas Renaissance is Clape's highest scoring Renaissance in more than a decade! If the 2016 is anything to go by (no 2017 was made due to low yields), it's a no-brainer. Alain Graillot's 2019 Crozes-Hermitage is one of the most reliable wines in the world and a must-have in the cellar. Finally, the fairly new cuvée from Chapoutier, the 2018 Sicamor Crozes-Hermitage, is one of the coolest new kids on the block. 'I'm so impressed by this wine,' writes Jamie Goode.

Tasting notes

Jamet, Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge 2019

'Very pure, lovely fruit - rich plum and blackberry, this is juicy with velvety tannins. It has good acidity, and a dry, savoury finish with quite serious tannins. Great balance and freshness here. Drinking Window 2021 - 2027.'Matt Walls, Decanter, 92/100

Jamet, Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc 2019

'Produced from an assemblage of different plots in the commune of Ampuis, the white Côtes du Rhône from Domaine Jamet is northern in character. Mainly produced from Marsanne and Viognier grapes, this wine is fresh, with minerality, and provides immediate enjoyment.'Domaine Jamet

Clape, Cornas Renaissance 2018

'Powerful, mineral-driven aromas of ripe black/blue fruits, candied flowers, olive, musky earth and exotic spices. Densely packed and animated on the palate, offering bitter cherry, blueberry and spicecake flavors that unwind slowly with air and show fine delineation. The blue fruit and floral notes drive an impressively long, spice-laced finish that's given shape by fine-grained, slowly building tannins.'Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 94-95/100

Alain Graillot, Crozes-Hermitage 2019

'Spice-driven dark berry, cherry, peony and licorice aromas are sharpened by a zesty mineral flourish. Fleshy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors turn sweeter with air and pick up a smoky nuance on the back half. Shows fine definition and energy and finishes spicy and quite long, displaying gently chewy tannins and a resonating floral quality.'Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 91-93/100

Chapoutier, Crozes-Hermitage Sicamor 2018

'So impressed with this wine. It's a relatively new release from Chapoutier, and it has a wonderful wild intensity to it. 14.5% alcohol. This blends different terroirs, with coarse-grained stony granite (Tournon granite) on the western side of the Hermitage hill, puddingstone on the eastern side of the Hermitage hill, and alluvial terraces in Les Chassis area. Destemmed, then fermented and macerated for 4-5 weeks, aged in 600 litre barrels for a year, then six months in concrete tanks. This is brooding, dark, reductive and savoury, with black cherries, blackberries, spice, cloves and pepper. It's meaty, dense and compact with good structure and acidity, and also some depth. There's an amazing energy to this wine, bringing in layers of flavour. Ashy and dark with iodine and meat.'Jamie Goode, Wineanorak, 95/100
