Brookdale Sixteen Field Blend 2021: An unforgettable maiden release!

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Brookdale has only produced two 500L barrels of their 2021 Sixteen Field Blend. The vision was to explore the farm’s microclimates, interplant 16 varieties and, thus, create 'a true South African blend'. The Brookdale team, including CWG Protégé and winemaker, Kiara Scott, as well as Duncan Savage and viticultural star Jaco Engelbrecht as consultants, has achieved this vision over the past 4 years, releasing an unforgettable maiden vintage.

The 2021 Sixteen Field Blend is pristine, with white floral notes, generous fruit weight on the mid-palate and defined salinity. The finish is textured, savoury and mineral with a zesty acidity. It has a fine sense of purity while overdelivering on elegance and intrinsic complexity.

Field blends are rare in SA with only a handful of interplanted vineyards remaining – often only comprised of up to 6 varieties. Brookdale, however, is resurrecting the lost art with this release, which comprises of 16 varieties and was just scored an exciting 93 points by Christian Eedes.

Brookdale was established in 2016 by UK-born proprietor, Tim Rudd, who saw potential in some overgrown land in Paarl. The aim was always to make use of unusual varieties and this new field blend is doing exactly that. This is the first chapter in this story, and we are delighted to be a part of it.

Tasting notes

Brookdale, Sixteen Field Blend 2021

'What are the 16 varieties? Team Brookdale is coy and, unsurprisingly, the wine shows little overt varietal character, one way or the other. The nose is complex and subtle with elusive top notes of floral perfume, hay and fynbos before pear and peach and then earth, spice and some nuttiness. The palate is medium bodied (despite an alcohol of 14%), the acidity moderate but not insufficient, the finish being grippy and dry but not excessively so. Without being overly forceful, it still instantly captures your attention.'Christian Eedes, 93/100
