‘A solid and powerful Barbaresco with fantastic depth of fruit and layers of tannins. Full and so deep and focused, with great length and structure. Bark, berry, mineral and deep terroir and gravitas. Try after 2027.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 97/100

‘Fruit for this wine comes from the Bricco di Treiso MGA and immediately shows more softness and textural definition. The 2019 Barbaresco Il Bricco is layered and rich with black fruit, spice, tar and a sweet hint of cinnamon. Il Bricco offers more overall power and structure for longer cellar aging. Pairing possibilities include wintery foods.’ – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 94+/100

‘Packed with cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral aromas and flavors, this red is reserved yet harmonious and structured. Reveals iron, tobacco and underbrush notes that add complexity as this unwinds on the long, dense aftertaste.’ – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 94/100

‘There is a more depth to the 2019 Barbaresco Il Bricco, although it is equally potent in its expressive perfume of licorice, leather, turned soil, and wild berries. Medium-bodied, with more ripeness, depth, and purity in its notes of red berries, tea leaf, and turned earth, it is long and persistent and has a great finish with present tannins. Drink over the next 12-15 years. This is all about perfume and incense.’ – Jeb Dunnuck, 93/100

‘The 2019 Barbaresco Il Bricco is a very pretty, beguiling wine. Sweet red cherry fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, mint and spice give the 2019 striking dimension and complexity. This deceptively mid-weight Barbaresco shows plenty of depth and punch. 2024-2039’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100

Producer information The historic family-owned Pio Cesare estate has been producing wine for 135 years, through 5 generations, in their ancient cellars in Alba. The cellars are built on the city’s 2,000-year-old ancient Roman walls. The family owns 70 hectares of vineyards, featuring high-quality hillside exposures, with parcels dotted around multiple communes of Barolo and Barbaresco. A visionary for quality, the late Pio Boffa transformed the company during his four decades as the head of the family business. Known to travel 200 days of the year, Pio was a global standard-bearer for Piedmont's wines. ‘I will carry on his legacy now with even more strength and energy and commitment,’ his daughter Federica Boffa promises.
