In this case a beautiful fresh Champagne from Michel Genet, ideal as an aperitif, with light canapes, but absolutely delicious with cheesy Gougères. Next we have added a fresh bright white that can handle lighter seafood, salads and white meats. Roodekrantz 1983 Old Vine Chenin 2023 is a mouthful, try it with some prawns on the fire. Should you require some serious white for some soft cheese or more demanding dishes, then you would need a Damascene Franchhoek Semillon 2023, a wine that has the texture and a touch of oak for structure that will be a great match for a side of salmon with fennel and tarragon butter!
The best tapas wine around, the whole-bunch, crunchy, violet, tasty young Tinto from Artuke, is fresh but one that still has some gravitas and structure to cope with a plate of salami, serrano ham and olives. Then a seriously structured red, for the serious roasts, and fine cheeses. The Pio Cesare Barbaresco 2019, is medium to full bodied red with dry tannins and serious structure to enjoy with a whole fillet off the braai and wild mushroom sauce. Finally, a sweet wine to finish the meal off, the Les Carmes de Rieussec Sauternes 2021 is in a fresher style, try it on its own or with a chicken or duck liver parfait.

Michel Genet Blanc de Blancs Spirit Grand Cru NV – R 750
The current Champagne has not yet been rated, please see the tasting notes on the previous disgorgement date:
‘(made from fruit grown in Chouilly and Cramant): Pale gold. Sexy aromas of Anjou pear, jasmine, chalky minerals and ginger. Dry, nervy and precise, offering sappy orchard and citrus fruit flavors and a touch of buttered toast. Clings nicely on the finish, which leaves notes of orange zest and minerals behind. I like this rich Champagne's energy.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 90/100
Roodekrantz 1983 Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2023 – R 150
This vintage has not been rated yet; see 2022 tasting notes:
‘Grapes from the same Paardeberg vineyard that supplies Rhenosterbosrug. Matured for 10 months, 90% in tank and 10% in barrel. Peach, tangerine and hay on the nose while the palate has good fruit concentration and well-integrated acidity. Deep and smooth textured in the best sense.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 90/100
Damascene W.O. Franschhoek Sémillon 2023 – R 535
‘85% Semillon, 15% Semillon Gris. Grapes from two Franschhoek vineyards, one planted in 1942 and the other in 1962. Elusive aromatics of hay and a touch of fennel before citrus, peach and nectarine. Broad but not listless – pleasing weight and texture, soft but sufficient acidity, the finish gently savoury. Makes for especially satisfying drinking. Alc: 13.41%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100
Artuke Tinto 2023 – R 225
‘The carbonic-maceration red 2023 Artuke, named after their village in Baños de Ebro, contains some 5% Viura grapes and has a moderate 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.5. It's light and fresh, aromatic and floral, open and expressive, quite harmonious for its young age. It was bottled after three to six months in concrete. It's a textbook example of the category and among my favorite carbonic-maceration reds from Rioja year after year. It's velvety and juicy, soft and tasty. It was bottled in late December 2023. 2024-2027’ – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 92/100
Pio Cesare Barbaresco Pio 2019 – R 1 150
‘This is a very typical Barbaresco, with a solid core of fruit. Lots of strawberries, cedar and chewy tannins. Full and structured. Excellent length, with the tannins kicking in at the end. This needs at least four or five years of bottle age. Try after 2027.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 95/100
Les Carmes de Rieussec Sauternes 2021 – R 395
‘The nose is subtle, with an initial minerality, with notes of hot stone and dry grass after the storm. This is followed by fruity notes of fresh apricot and some white flowers. On the nose and palate, we are guided by a Sauvignon aroma (39% Sauvignon Blanc in the blend) with a light lemony feel and plenty of freshness on the palate. The confit is discreet, the wood very well integrated, giving life to a chiselled wine to which we want to return.’ – Winemaker
