Festive Food and Wine Pairing Pack

This is the set of wines to take you through a festive meal – and fantastic value to boot. Champagne is a must, and the Drappier Carte d’Or is bright and zesty. The Trimbach Riesling is great with a range of appetisers, and a pitch-perfect match for gammon and lighter pork roasts. From one of the best Chenin producers in South Africa comes Alheit Hereafter Here Chenin 2022, while Moya Meaker’s Elgin Pinot Noir boasts lighter fruit, good structure and fresh acidity that’s beautiful with roast chicken and thyme stuffing, light roasted pork, or traditional beef tongue. As we move to the weightier end of the table, we include the 2016 vintage Lilian Ladouys St-Estèphe from Bordeaux. This is the perfect companion to the star roast, especially if it’s lamb or beef. The end should be sweet, and the Doisy-Daëne Sauternes 2019 offers incredible value and a luxurious finale. Bon appétit!

Summary
    Drappier, Carte d'Or Brut NV – R 745
'This bright and zesty Champagne is lightly juicy and appealing, offering flavors of Honeycrisp apple, ripe white cherry, biscuit and pickled ginger. Balanced and lacy in texture, with a lingering, spiced finish.' – Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 92/100

    Alheit Vineyards, Hereafter Here 2022 – R 295
‘Mostly a young vineyard Chenin Blanc, grapes from Swartland, Upper Blaauwklippen and Polkadraai Hills plus some older vine parcels from the Paardeberg. Some flinty reduction before pear, peach and citrus as well as some floral perfume on the nose. Good fruit density, well coated acidity and some light grip to the finish. Relatively thick textured (alc: 13.34%) with layers of flavour.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

    Trimbach, Riesling 2021 – R 365
‘The fruit for this estate 2021 Riesling is from numerous villages with limestone, sandy and granitic soils. It is blended every year for consistency - which here means purity and precision. A lovely tangerine hint characterizes the nose with tart citrus intensity; a touch of smoky reduction is still at play. The palate, likewise, is a picture of tart, juicy, mouth-watering citrus. It’s straight, focused, slender, yet alive. Riesling lovers will rejoice at this taut and refreshing cuvée.’ – Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous, 91/100

    Lilian Ladouys, Saint-Estèphe 2016 – R 525
‘The blueberry and blackberry aromas are certainly attractive here. Full-bodied and dense with a very velvety texture and a long, generous finish of ripe fruit and spice.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 93/100

    Moya Meaker, W.O. Elgin Pinot Noir 2022 – R 300
‘Matured for 11 months in 300-litre barrels, 20% new. Exotic aromatics of red cherry, orange, rose and white pepper. The palate is luscious but not weighty or sweet. Lovely bright acidity to go with super-fine tannins, this grows in refinement with each new vintage.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100

    Doisy-Daëne, Sauternes 2019 – R 550
‘The 2019 Doisy-Daëne has a gorgeous bouquet of wild honey, quince, saffron and touch of shucked oyster shell, intense and utterly seductive. The palate is well balanced, taut and fresh, with a fine bead of such perfectly pitched acidity that you barely notice the botrytized finish. An outstanding wine from Jean-Jacques Dubourdieu. 2024-2060’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 96/100
