Cartology’s ‘little brother’, a Portuguese value red, & our May Insiders’ case

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Making an appearance in this week's roundup is the maiden release of what Chris Alheit describes as 'a little brother for Cartology'. The Hereafter Here Chenin 2020 is an exciting new addition to their range and a 'cracking debut vintage', says Tim Atkin. We also highlight a delicious value red from Portugal, and Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Riesling – rated number 1 on James Sucking's list of best value wines in 2021.

Our May Insiders' case has something for everyone, with free delivery anywhere in South Africa.

Alheit, Hereafter Here 2020
R 300 per bottle

Greg Sherwood recently raved about this awesome young-vine Chenin Blanc, made by the talented Chris Alheit. He says that it's reminiscent of the 2011 Cartology, with opulent fruit and 'fleshy exuberance', dubbing Chris the 'hardest working winemaker' in South Africa. The Hereafter Here flew well under the radar compared to the rest of the Alheit releases. However, it would be a shame to miss this Stellenbosch Chenin. It's perfect for early drinking while the rest of the range waits in the cellar.

Niepoort, Drink Me Tinto 2019
R 190 per bottle

The ultimate value wine from the Douro in Portugal, Niepoort's Drink Me Tinto 2019 should be everybody's house red. 'Drink Me is so apt for this wine,' writes MW Julia Harding of JancisRobinson.com, scoring it 16+/20. She continues, 'There's a dark, rocky, almost dusty overlay that I associate with the Douro … deep and rich-fruited on the palate, generous and yet so lively and fresh.' It sings with food and stood out at our recent Portuguese Perfect Pair event with squid, chorizo and fillet trinchado. Fill your boots!

Pewsey Vale, Eden Valley Riesling 2021
R 430 per bottle

The consistency of Pewsey Vale's Eden Valley Riesling has turned the world's attention to Australia's outstanding cool-climate Riesling. Topping James Sucking's list of best value wines in 2021, this 96-pointer boasts classic Riesling aromatics with a distinctive mineral intensity. The 2021 offers fresh lemon and lime fruit. Its delicate floral aroma and phenomenal natural acidity underpin the precision, focus and length of the wine.

Strauss & Co fine wine NFT auction

The last hour of the Strauss & Co Icon South African Wine NFT online auction saw frenetic bidding as collections of five of South Africa's finest wines were sold as non-fungible tokens for the first time. Prices exceeded estimates on several lots, with Klein Constantia's Vin de Constance vertical collection from 1986-2027 reaching R1,251,800 including commissions. Meerlust's 50-year vertical of their famous Rubicon reached R1,081,100, while Vilafonté Series C 2003-2027 reached R569,000, Mullineux Olerasay 1-20 achieved R318,640 and Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2000-2025 reached R250,360. The unique digital contracts hold between 20 and 50 vintages, with collections from 66 to 288 bottles.

“This is a big step in securing South Africa's fine wine heritage! These pristine vintage bottles are now securely on the blockchain for future trading and enjoyment,” commented Strauss & Co Fine Wine specialist Roland Peens after the white-glove sale. “We believe this new technology is the most powerful way of packaging and trading vintage wines, especially when provenance is so vital.”
