Our May PIP, bargain Piedmont, & a world-class Elgin Chardonnay

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Following our hugely successful Regional Chardonnay Review and Portuguese tasting, we'd be remiss if we didn't highlight some of the nights' standout wines. This week's roundup also shines the spotlight on our new brokerage listings, including showstoppers such as Porseleinberg Syrah 2018 and Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2015, as well as on a rare vertical collection from Pesquié – one of France's best-loved producers. Finally, don't miss the newly released Haarlem to Hope from B Vintners. Complex and intriguing, it's among the finest 2021 white blends yet.

Brokerage platform – exciting new listings
vintages from 1961

We have just added a fantastic selection of new wines to our brokerage platform. They range from the superb value Catherine Marshall Amatra whites and red, to a collection of 100-pointers, including Porseleinberg Syrah 2018, Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2015 and Mullineux Olerasay #2. Also look out for Moulin Touchais 1985 and 1997, as well as Storm Vrede Pinot Noir, Ashbourne Pinotage and Alheit's one-off sweet wine, Lost and Found 2019. Take a moment to scour our full brokerage list and you'll discover wines from across South Africa and Europe, with vintages as far back as 1961!

Iona, Monopole Fynbos Chardonnay 2018
R 525 per bottle

Since our Regional Chardonnay Review, we've seen real excitement lingering around the excellent Chardonnays from Elgin that are flying well under the radar. The Iona Monopole Fynbos Chardonnay 2018 is one such wine and was recently awarded 95+ points from Greg Sherwood. It's complex, with layers of wet stone, fynbos, umami, concentrated stone fruit, and nuances of texture from subdued oak elements. Only 500 bottles were produced, and the farm is already sold out.

Pesquié, Ascensio Ventoux Rouge Vertical
R 2,945 per bottle

Château Pesquié is an unsung hero of the Rhône and their wines continue to impress wine lovers and critics alike, with Robert Parker calling them one of his 'all-time favorite producers in France'. We celebrate the estate with a rare vertical collection of their flagship Ascensio Ventoux Rouge from 2016-2018. This 95% Grenache and 5% Syrah blend shows a phenomenal balance of power, concentration, and tension. Produced in small quantities and only in great vintages.

Easy Portuguese review

Those who were lucky enough to get a seat at the Easy Portuguese tasting earlier this week reaped the reward! Anselmo Mendes' white wines demonstrated why they're the perfect summer companions, but it was Niepoort that was the star of the night. Their Conciso Branco 2018 was the firm white wine favourite. It showed layers of orchard fruit and citrus pithiness, making this aromatic and characterful white a diverse food wine. Niepoort's 2017 LBV Port is an ideal conclusion to any dinner. It offers insane value and is densely packed with black cherry and cedarwood spice, coating the palate for a concentrated, savoury finish.

B Vintners, Haarlem to Hope 2021
R 275 per bottle

For the second year in a row, the Haarlem to Hope from B Vintners is a Chenin Blanc and Semillon blend. This heritage-style white is pitch perfect and among the best white blends from 2021 so far. The clarity and vision behind this wine give it impetus and power, and Gavin is proving to be one of the most astute winemakers in SA. This new release is not to be missed!
