An SA Pinot unlike any other: Kara-Tara Reserve 2020

Kara-Tara Reserve 2020

An SA Pinot unlike any other

Rüdger van Wyk burst onto the winemaking scene when he won the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year award in 2018. His passion for wine was ignited by the Cape Winemaker’s Guild Protégé programme, as well as a life-changing harvest in Burgundy, and the Kara-Tara Pinot Noir Reserve 2020 showcases his incredible talent.

Rüdger is now winemaker at Stark-Condé and Kara-Tara is his own label, focusing on cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Kara-Tara Pinot Noir Reserve is unlike any other South African Pinot. Nuanced and elegant, it displays a haunting array of florals, red berry, earth, whiffs of iron, blood orange, and meat spice. The core shimmers with reined in red cherry, constantly shapeshifting and drawing the drinker in to explore its uniqueness. It’s a wine that demands contemplation and attention. There is a weightless intensity and fresh, savoury thread to the lingering finish.

This is a barrel selection of Pinot Noir, clone PN115, sourced from an isolated vineyard in the Overberg. The vineyards are 160 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains that are often covered in cooling fog. The Kara-Tara Pinot Noir Reserve 2020 is 20% whole-bunch fermented and spent 14 months in small French oak, 20% of which was new.

Rüdger sums it up best: ‘I think it combines both the characteristics of a unique and consistent terroir with intensity and structure, which you look for in great wines.’
