6 winter warmers you’ll love

6 winter warmers you’ll love

With cold and rainy weather upon us, we asked our team to share their go-to winter warmer reds. We looked to familiar favourites – wines that bring back memories and offer up comfort and joy. Our recommendations include a near-decade-old Pinot Noir, a classic Port, a perennial best-seller, and some new kids on the block. At these prices, you might be tempted to buy them by the caseload!

Lelie van Saron, Jade Red 2020

Delicate yet powerful

'Produced from vines in the Hemel-en Aarde Valley, the maiden release of Natasha Williams' lifestyle range is focused, elegant and nothing short of exciting. We particularly love this limited-production Syrah and Petite Syrah blend as it offers layers of concentrated fruit, complexity, and savoury freshness. At R175, everyone should stock up on this one this winter.'Lauren Segers

Nugues, Beaujolais Villages 2019

Fine boned but densely packed

'While rich Ports kept the night-time chill at bay, the Domaine des Nugues Beaujolais Villages 2019 was the surprise highlight of my camping adventure this past weekend. A superb companion to a cheese and charcuterie board, it's a mouth-watering wine that keeps you coming back for more. Layers of juicy wild strawberry and raspberry fruit finish with garrigue and dry, stony tannins. A delicious wine at only R255 per bottle.'Kenny Nassen

Radford Dale, AD Pinot Noir 2013

Pure and perfumed

'The AD Pinot Noir from Radford Dale is a wonderful effort in 2013. Though the colour shows initial signs of ageing, the palate gives nothing away. Red cherry and rose petal reign supreme on the nose, while the finish is long and clean, with great minerality and a hint of reduction. The wine dissolves on your palate in the best sense, leaving you refreshed and thirsty for more. A joy to drink.'Johan Malan

Chapoutier, Bila-Haut Rouge 2020

A fireside red from the Rhône Valley

'For more than a decade, Chapoutier's Bila-Haut Rouge has been one my favourites. It's ideal for cold nights that call for a hearty stew around the fireplace. A soulful blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, with a mineral, dry finish, it never disappoints. It's a perennial overachiever and has been on Wine Spectator's Top 100 list for many years.'Janine Retief

Winshaw Family, Malbec 2019

Satisfyingly balanced

'This is possibly the best Malbec in South Africa and a perfect winter red. The nose is rich and inviting, plush and full of attractive darker berry aromas. The palate follows with some Bordeaux-like earthiness and good tannic grip and weight, with a lingering, balanced end.'James Pietersen

Niepoort, Ruby Port NV

Expressive and characterful

'Niepoort's Ruby Port is an excellent "starter Port" that's sure to keep you warm. It's fresh and powerful with dark red fruits – perfect as a standalone dessert or with soft cheeses. The Ruby Port is a field blend from low-yielding, old vines in the Douro. Hand-harvested and foot trodden, it's then aged in large wooden vats for 3 years. This is the wine that our entire team – from packing to cellaring and selling – buy the most in winter.'Jolette Steyn
