We were lucky enough to spend time with some of our favourite producers in France and Italy this month! Among the vinous highlights was the perfect Champagne for cooler days and nights – Drappier Cuvée Charles de Gaulle, which we tasted with Michel Drappier himself last week. The Foillard Morgon Côte du Py 2020 from Beaujolais is fleshy and layered – ideal for autumn, while Brookdale Mason Road Chenin is drinking superbly and represents fantastic value at R125. From Etna pioneer Terre Nere comes the astonishingly complex Dagala di Bocca d'Orzo 2020, and we round off with Plaisir’s new Grand Plaisir White – a delicious introduction to this exciting farm.

Drappier Cuvée Charles de Gaulle Brut NV
R 875 PER BOTTLE
This special cuvée is named after their close neighbour, statesman and Drappier enthusiast Charles de Gaulle. In honour of Charles, who adored rich, slightly sweeter Champagnes, it’s generous and gourmand, yet reined in and a Brut Champagne. Josh Raynolds described the cuvée as a ‘rich yet lithe Champagne with strong finishing cut, lift and stony persistence’. Michel Drappier’s father, now 97, still remembers welcoming Charles to their home and sharing a few bottles of Drappier with him.

Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py 2020
R 675 PER BOTTLE
‘The Future is Beaujolais,’ proclaims Neal Martin. Legendary producer Jean Foillard has reinvigorated the region and raised its status. Don’t miss out on the Foillard Morgon Côte du Puy 2020. From vineyards of up to 90 years old atop an extinct volcano, this 100% Gamay bursts with energetic red berry fruit and dried herb aromatics. Racking up a 95-point score from the Wine Advocate, the 2020 ‘looks to be one of the finest vintages of this cuvée in recent years’.

Brookdale Mason Road Chenin Blanc 2021
R 125 PER BOTTLE
We tasted a bottle of the Mason Road Chenin 2021 last week and couldn’t get enough of it. Showing fruit definition, crisp acidity, and a moreish, pithy finish, the texture is gorgeous and the fruit lingers for a solid 30 seconds! Now nearing the end of this vintage – and punching above its weight at R125 – buy it by the caseload.

Terre Nere Etna Rosso Dagala di Bocca d'Orzo 2020
R 1,495 PER BOTTLE
We love finding special wines that capture a certain place in time. One such wine is from Sicilian trailblazer Terre Nere. Their Etna Rosso Dagala di Bocca d'Orzo 2020 pays homage to the historic sites of Etna, having miraculously survived the lava flows of 1981. Marco de Grazia unearthed the parcel in 2017, with no bottled or written history of its potential. Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese, this is Etna DOC’s only monopole.

Plaisir Grand Plaisir White 2022
R 490 PER BOTTLE
With a new winemaker, new name and new branding for their top-tier wines, it’s no wonder you’re hearing the buzz around Plaisir. The Grand Plaisir White is ‘elegant and understated’, says Christian Eedes, noting how well managed the oak is on this 100% Chardonnay in 2022. We love the flinty reduction on the nose, leading to inviting white peach, macadamia nuts and nutmeg spice. Refreshing and super dry on the finish.
