We’re diving into this week’s roundup with an absolute bargain at R365. Du Retout 2020 has depth and character in spades, and it’s quickly become one of our go-to wines from Bordeaux. Pieter Ferreira’s 2017 Blanc de Blancs is a deluxe bubbly from Robertson that’s made in minute quantities, and GD Vajra’s sublime Barolo Bricco dell Viole 2018 shows off the pedigree of its site and is expected to age well past 2040. At R155, the Joostenberg Family Red Blend 2021 is just ‘so damn likeable’, says Christian Eedes – buy it by the caseload! Plus, there’s something for everyone at our upcoming events in Cape Town and Johannesburg, including a walk-around tasting of our recently landed imports.

Du Retout Haut-Médoc 2020
R365 PER BOTTLE
Du Retout from the Haut-Médoc has delivered another impressive red from the superb 2020 vintage, following the success of the 2019. The 2020 is surprisingly approachable for a Cabernet-dominant, Left Bank wine; it’s fruit-forward with a classically dry and moreish finish that leaves you thirsty for more. Stock up and open it without hesitation.

Pieter Ferreira Blanc de Blancs 2017
R 460 PER BOTTLE
What could be better than a 95-point Chardonnay from one of the best vintages in SA? How about a Cap Classique made by Pieter and Ann Ferreira!! This Blanc de Blancs is ‘a bubbly of power but also focus and detail’, says Christian Eedes. The driving acidity, fruit weight and chalky texture make this a perfect pair for everything from oysters to roast chicken. And even better, it’s bound to age for at least a decade. Made in tiny quantities, we have a few bottles available.

GD Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2018
R 1,395 PER BOTTLE
‘As always, the [Vajra] Barolos offer a compelling mix of classicism and contemporary finesse,’ says Antonio Galloni of Vinous. At 400m-480m in altitude, the Bricco delle Viole boasts roses, cherry, tobacco and a woodsy minerality, perfectly upheld by fine yet present tannins and fresh acidity. These are the last few years we’ll be able to buy Barolo single vineyards for reasonable prices, so get stuck in. And join us for our GD Vajra masterclass with Simone Mannelli on the 20th of March in Observatory. Only six seats left!

Joostenberg Family Red Blend 2021
R 155 PER BOTTLE
Joostenberg has been organically certified for 11 years and counting, and the 2021 Family Red Blend is their best release to date. With beautiful notes of blackcurrant, red cherry, bouquet garni and white pepper spice, this wine punches well above its R155 price tag. The tannins are chalky and long and carry notes of roasted fennel bulb to the end. Utterly delicious!
