We’ve just added a new event to our Cape Town tasting schedule, and it’s sure to be memorable. On the 21st of May, Wine Cellar and Glenelly Cellarmaster Dirk van Zyl will celebrate the launch of the 2019 vintage of Lady May with a vertical tasting, alongside top-scoring Bordeaux. Speaking of incredible events, today’s roundup wouldn’t be complete without two shining stars from our recent Loire Legends evening – Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon 2003 and Huet Clos du Bourg Moelleux 2002. The Moulin Touchais is a brilliant, long-ageing Chenin straight from the estate’s historic cellars, while the Huet is ethereal and elegant – simply mindblowing. Closer to home, we’re so impressed with the 2023 release of Wolf & Woman Grenache Blanc, and Geographica’s 2020 Thoreau is everything you’re looking for in a great Cabernet Franc. Finally, the latest Strauss & Co timed online auction presents a beautifully curated collection of fine Burgundy, Bordeaux, and other big names from around the world.

We tasted this during our recent deep dive into Chenin, along with wines dating back to 1964! These are supremely long-ageing, late-harvest Chenin Blancs – released 10 years after harvest. They tend to taste drier with time as the high acidity balances the richness and sweetness perfectly. Opulent and textured, with a delicate acidity, it almost makes one think of mature Champagne. These are terrific milestone Chenins – ideal for birthdays, anniversaries and more.

Huet Clos du Bourg Moelleux 2002

Huet is arguably one of the greatest estates in the world and their Chenins are likely to outlive us all. Alongside their wines from the 2022 vintage, we had the privilege of opening the Clos du Bourg Moelleux 2002. The vineyard is among the most famous in Vouvray and the vintage is one of the best in about 40 years. It was extremely youthful and vivacious, showing such detail and layers, with a dry, mineral, orange marmalade finish.

Wolf & Woman’s latest release is poised, precise and concentrated. From high-altitude vineyards in the Piekenierskloof, you’ll be rewarded with inviting aromatics of magnolia, fynbos, and vibrant peaches leading to classic lanolin and spice, followed by a chalky, dry finish. We wish Jolandie made more of this but unfortunately there isn’t nearly enough – yet!

We’re seeing real demand for Cabernet Franc, and one of our favourites is this ‘pitch perfect’ (Christian Eedes) example from the legendary Chris Williams. In its perfect drinking window, with potential to age another decade, it offers vibrant fruit and subtle herbs with incredible length and a pointed finish. The wine is named in honour of 19th-century American naturalist, Henry David Thoreau.
