The leaves are changing from green to gold and we’re welcoming the change of season with this week’s picks. From a vineyard that’s almost 100 years old, the 95-point Colombo Muscat 2024 is a ‘revelation’, while the Les Tours de Laroque Saint-Emilion 2019 is superb at R425. The Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2019, from some of the highest vineyards in Barolo, is ‘an exceptional expression of Negri’s winemaking prowess’ (Wine Enthusiast), and the Clemens Busch Marienburg Falkenlay Auslese 2018 (in 375ml) is a single-vineyard Mosel Riesling to savour. The Atlas Swift Cederberg Chardonnay 2023 is extremely limited and ideal for autumn. Or opt for our April Value Case, spanning Spain, Argentina, France and South Africa, with free delivery anywhere in SA.

Colombo Muscat 2024
R 295 per bottle
In just a few short years, Dan Colombo has become one of our favourite dry Muscat producers. Named ‘There’s Something About You’, it's from a gnarly (almost) 100-year-old vineyard on the Skurfberg and is among the most refreshing, well balanced skin-contact wines you’ll find. Jasmine and dried peach aromatics lead to a saline, focused, pure-fruited palate with a chalky finish.

Les Tours de Laroque Saint-Émilion 2019
R 425 per bottle
After David Suire’s visit last week, we’re even more keen on the exceptional wines of Château Laroque. They’re the personification of limestone and Merlot, with some of the highest percentages of the variety in Saint-Émilion. The Les Tours is produced from younger vines and the 2019 is bottled pleasure, showing red fruit, chalky limestone minerality and sappy tannins.

Giulia Negri Barolo La Tartufaia 2019
R 850 per bottle
At just 24, Giulia Negri took the reins of her family estate in Piedmont and swiftly gained recognition as a rising star. Today her wines are highly sought-after around the world. Refined and aromatic, the 2019 vintage was ‘exemplary’, according to Wine Spectator. La Tartufaia offers an enticing bouquet of red berries followed by notes of dark rose, forest floor, orange zest and dried herbs. This wine is sure to impress.

Clemens Busch Marienburg Falkenlay Auslese 2018
R 675 per 375ml bottle
‘Highly stimulating and refined’, this sweet Riesling from Clemens Busch is the ‘most exciting’ single-vineyard Auslese of the three produced (Wine Advocate). The wine is low in alcohol but boasts amazing concentration and a light, silky texture that complements the complex palate. With notes of guava, passion fruit, ginger preserve and peach with a spine of zesty acidity, it showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of one of the Mosel’s greatest biodynamic producers.

Atlas Swift Cederberg Chardonnay 2023
R 430 per bottle
Produced in minute quantities by husband and wife duo Martin and Welma Smith, who regard themselves as Chardonnay aficionados, this wine is so beautiful. It comes from high up in the Cederberg, with white florals, white stone fruit, and the stillness of the mountains all coming through in the wine. There’s a little river pebble note, as well as great salinity and a limy acidity on the finish.
