Áster Crianza 2019

There’s nothing quite like this wine in South Africa. The Áster Crianza 2019 from Spain’s other great region, Ribera del Duero, is made from high-altitude (around 800m) Tempranillo, known locally as tinto del pais. Everything in Ribera del Duero is intense and so is this wine. The climate is extreme, with very cold winters and hot summers, and some of the highest altitudes in the northern hemisphere! ‘This exceptional climate gives Ribera’s wines a refreshing, mouthwatering acidity that provides the perfect balance to the ripe summer fruit,’ says Decanter. Think ribs, smoked brisket and roasted vegetables with paprika.

Emilio Lustau Almacenista Amontillado del Puerto Obrégon 1/10 NV

Sit close to a fire, a pet, a person or this incredible sherry from Spain. This artisanal Amontillado is multi-layered, delicious and perfect for winter. The Solera consists of 10 casks, aged in José Luis González Obregón’s bodegas in El Puerto de Santa María. ‘It has lots of range, with ginger, date, toasted almond, blood orange, singed sandalwood and green tea notes all allied to finely beaded acidity,’ writes James Molesworth. Amontillado sherry is richer and nuttier than the Manzanilla or Fino styles and will sing with Cape Malay cuisine, spicy Asian dishes, and almost any hard cheese.

Giscours Margaux 2020

Giscours ‘is now enjoying its finest run since its glory days in the 1970s’, writes William Kelley (95/100). With the largest forest area of all Médoc châteaux, the wines from this remarkable estate are just getting better. ‘The 2020 is both flamboyant and serious, a pretty appealing combination,’ notes Antonio Galloni, scoring the 2020 vintage 96 points. The wine offers immediate pleasure with its dark cherry, liquorice and plum elements, yet cellaring for 10-15 years+ will be handsomely rewarded.
