After our Piedmont Party at A Tavola two weekends ago, Wine Cellar is happy to shine the light on must-have affordable reds from Piedmont, made from the Barbera grape. They're smooth, fresh, medium to full-bodied and go with just about every dish you can think of!
Lovers of Piedmont ‘owe it to themselves to check out the region’s Dolcetto and Barbera bottlings’, asserts Antonio Galloni from Vinous. Today we’re offering four Barbera d’Albas from GD Vajra, Marengo, Pio Cesare and Giulia Negri. These are from older vines, traditionally planted just below the Nebbiolo on slightly warmer sites to temper Barbera’s famous acidity.
‘The top Barberas especially … are finely-crafted, world-class wines that no longer need to stand in the shadow of the more famous Piedmontese reds.’ – Wine Enthusiast
‘Barolo and Barbaresco get the lion’s share of the attention in Piedmont, but the best Dolcettos, Barberas and Nebbiolos reflect the same values that make Piedmont’s top wines so compelling.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Versatile and smartly priced, these four Barberas are an ideal introduction to Piedmont’s ‘wine of the people’.
