Trimbach: ‘Riesling Lovers Rejoice’ – Vinous

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Domaine Trimbach is ‘one of the steadfast stars in the Alsace firmament’, says Vinous. Situated in the northeast of France, in Ribeauvillé, they’ve been cultivating some of the world’s best dry Rieslings for almost 400 years.

Their famous Frédéric Émile is a Grand Cru cuvée, and we bought as much as we could get our hands on! The limited 2015 vintage is ’one of the best young FEs I have memory of!’ writes Ian d’Agata of Vinous. Crafted from a 45-year-old site of Grands Crus, namely Geisberg and Osterberg, it boasts a crystalline Riesling structure with fabulous power and complexity.

Offering earlier drinkability and lip-smacking juiciness is the Trimbach Riesling 2021. It captures the purity and mineral intensity of the region’s terroir and is the perfect companion to sushi nights. Blended for consistency from various plots, ‘Riesling lovers will rejoice at this taut and refreshing cuvée’ (Vinous).

Trimbach: ‘Riesling Lovers Rejoice’ – Vinous

This 13th generation family-run operation has mastered the classic, bone-dry and electric style, elevating them to one of ‘the most famous Riesling estates in all of Alsace’ (Wine Advocate). The domaine is favoured by a unique micro-climate and chalky limestone soils, giving incredible definition, linearity and length to their wines.

Currently at the helm of this close-knit family operation is 31-year-old Julien Trimbach. The inclusion of biodynamics and experimentation with other varieties – such as Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer – have made this historical estate a fascinating place for new wine discoveries.

Tasting notes

Trimbach Riesling 2021

‘The fruit for this estate 2021 Riesling is from numerous villages with limestone, sandy and granitic soils. It is blended every year for consistency - which here means purity and precision. A lovely tangerine hint characterizes the nose with tart citrus intensity; a touch of smoky reduction is still at play. The palate, likewise, is a picture of tart, juicy, mouth-watering citrus. It’s straight, focused, slender, yet alive. Riesling lovers will rejoice at this taut and refreshing cuvée.’Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous, 91/100

Trimbach Cuvée Frédéric Émile 2015

‘Vibrant straw-green. The penetrating, explosive nose offers yellow apple, musky ginger, flint and chamomile. Dense, sappy and highly concentrated; peach and balsamic flavors are complicated by a hint of crystallized citrus peel. Displays lovely balance from start to very long finish. This is a noteworthy step up in concentration and complexity from Trimbach’s Mandelberg and Schlossberg Rieslings, however delightful those last two wines are in 2015. In keeping with the hot, dry 2015 vintage, this strikes me as sweeter than usual for the Fréderic Emile, though by the time it goes on sale in seven or eight years, it will taste less sweet than it is today. Clearly, the berries and bunches were extremely small in 2015, and so the wine is especially concentrated, rich and glyceral, all of which contribute a dimension of sweetness. However, the small berries didn’t give much juice and only 26,000 bottles were produced in 2015, instead of the more usual 40,000. Always a blend of grapes grown in the Geisberg and Osterberg sites, the wine’s makeup in 2015 is about 60/40 in favor of the Osterberg, but not surprisingly, the Geisberg’s presence really comes through in a hot year like 2015. I personally like it more when the Osterberg stands out, but that said, this is a really outstanding wine in the making, one of the best young FEs I have memory of.’Ian D’Agata, Vinous, 95+/100
