Can Sumoi: Fresh arrivals from the Penedès visionary, Pepe Raventós

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Since 1497, and for more than 20 generations, the Raventós family have been working the land and tending vines in Penedès, Spain. Pepe Raventós officially joined the family business, Raventós i Blanc, in 2001, and in 2017 he started Can Sumoi with his childhood friend, Francesc Escala.

The focus here is on organically grown, indigenous varieties – namely Parellada, Montonega, Garnatxa, Xarel.lo and Sumoll, made with minimal intervention in the cellar. There are 30 hectares of vines surrounded by 380 hectares of forest on this ancient (previously abandoned) estate, with an average vine age of 50 years, situated 300-600m above sea level. Pepe’s wines are precise, mineral, floral, fresh, and incredibly moreish. If you like Terre Nere, you’ll love these!

We’re proud to welcome them as a new producer and offer three of their still wines. The rosé, 2022 La Rosa, is a blend of 60% Sumoll and 40% Xarel.lo, while the 2022 Can Sumoi Xarel.lo white is 100% Xarel.lo. Their 2021 Garnatxa Sumoll is a 50/50 blend of each variety.

Raventós i Blanc have been one of the trailblazers in Spain and are considered to be among the finest – if not the finest – sparkling wine producers around. ‘Readers familiar with the Raventos’ range of sparkling wines won’t be surprised to hear that the quality of these still wines is quite high, especially for the prices,’ wrote Vinous’ Josh Raynolds of Can Sumoi.

Tasting notes

Can Sumoi La Rosa 2022

This vintage has not been rated yet; see the 2021 tasting note below.

‘Bright, salmon skin color. Spice-accented raspberry, cherry and orange pith aromas, along with a pit fruit quality that builds with air. In a fresh, lively style, offering intense citrus fruit and red berry flavors and hints of candied flowers and white pepper. Finishes with firm cut and mineral-tinged persistence, leaving a dusty mineral note behind.’ – Josh Raynolds, Vinous, 91/10

Can Sumoi Xarel·lo 2022

This vintage has not been rated yet; see the 2021 tasting note below.

‘The balsamic 2021 Xarel.lo has notes of fennel and aniseed, coming through as young, primary and varietal. It has 12.4% alcohol, good freshness and a mellow mouthfeel. This is clean, precise, floral and serious, with a dry finish.’ – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 92/100

Can Sumoi Garnatxa Sumoll 2021

‘The first vintage I have tasted of their red blend, the 2021 Garnatxa - Sumoll is a 50/50 blend of both grapes that feels very primary, tender and fruit-driven, with mellow aromas, moderate alcohol and good freshness. It's juicy and tasty, with abundant, slightly chalky tannins and clean, precise aromas and flavors. It matured in stainless steel for nine months and was bottled unoaked in April 2022.’ – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate
