This Grenache-led Côtes-du-Rhône from the Roger Perrin family is a classy mini-Châteauneuf – for only R250 a bottle! The opposite of heavy-handed Rhône reds, it’s finessed and refreshing, perfect for autumn weather, soups and stews.

This Côtes-du-Rhône rouge, whilst meant to be an everyday house wine, is a step above the rest in this category. It’s brambly, pure-fruited and perfumed with a dense core, deep tannins, granitic minerality and a dry finish. The savoury spice, black olives and garrigue make it incredibly moreish.

The small, family-owned domaine is situated in the Vaucluse region between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the small town of Orange in the Southern Rhône, about 20km north of Avignon. Dubbed a new star in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation by the Wine Advocate, this is a producer to watch.

Roger Perrin took over the running of the property from his father-in-law in 1969 and established his eponymous domaine in 1980. The baton was then passed to his son Luc, and today the domaine is run by Roger’s daughter and grandson, Véronique and Xavier. They work the vineyards in a sustainable and organic manner, looking after 40 ha across 70 different plots around their home. The average vine age is 60 years old, with some as old as 100 years.
