Moya Meaker’s latest stellar releases

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Moya Meaker has quickly become one of the most exciting properties to watch for Pinot and Riesling in Elgin. Made by Damascene's rockstar winemaker Jean Smit, alongside business partner David Curl, the wines offer incredible quality at this price.

The 2022 Moya Meaker Elgin Pinot Noir is among the country's best Rand-for-Rand bottles of Pinot at just R300. Tasting it again last week confirmed its complexity, refinement, and elegance. Its rich, dark cherry and blood orange introduction is complemented by notes of black tea, crushed stone and damp earth, with fine tannins and a bright finish.

Moya Meaker’s latest stellar releases

‘Dry Riesling is one of the wine world’s undervalued treasures,’ says Jancis Robinson, and the grape’s versatility with food goes unmatched. The 2022 small-batch Riesling from Moya Meaker is electric and reminiscent of an Alsatian Riesling, with aromas of lemon curd, elderflower, and white peach. The palate follows with intensity and a driving acidity, giving way to a long, chalky finish.

Established in 2010 by Canadian-born David Curl, the former owner of Château Gaby in Bordeaux, this Elgin property lies in an amphitheatre formed by various mountains. From high-density, high-altitude Elgin vineyards planted in 2010 in Bokkeveld shale, Moya Meaker has the perfect terroir for Pinot Noir. The grapes were destemmed and whole-berry fermented, resulting in a soft, pure fruit extraction. Named after David Curl's mother-in-law, who was Miss SA in 1959, the Moya Meaker brand and wines celebrate her radiance and lively persona.

Tasting notes

Moya Meaker W.O. Elgin Pinot Noir 2022

'Matured for 11 months in 300-litre barrels, 20% new. Exotic aromatics of red cherry, orange, rose and white pepper. The palate is luscious but not weighty or sweet. Lovely bright acidity to go with super-fine tannins, this grows in refinement with each new vintage.'Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100

Moya Meaker W.O. Elgin Riesling 2022

'Fermented and matured in concrete. Enchanting aromatics of pear, peach, lime, green apple, white pepper and spice with just a touch of reduction in the background. The palate shows good clarity – clean, sweet fruit playing off against punchy acidity, the finish super-dry.'Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100
