Kruger Family Karoo Syrah 2022: ‘Thrillingly tense!’ – CE 95

Dear *|FNAME|*,

Johan Kruger has dreamed of making wines from this special site for 20 years. From 1500m above sea level – SA’s highest and possibly Africa’s coldest vineyard – comes a Syrah like no other. Brooding and inward, this is one for the purists. The Karoo Syrah 2022 is shy on fruit with a cool centre, crushed stone minerality and bone-dry, granular tannins. It’s extremely youthful and requires days to open up, showing floral notes and darker fruit, leading to an umami finish.

Johan took over the vineyard in 2019 and this is his first release. A labour of love, the vineyard is covered in snow in winter and the wine can only be made in vintages that mother nature allows. This fascinating wine transports you to a place of grit and survival – a vivid experience of winemaking on the edge.

Kruger Family Karoo Syrah 2022: ‘Thrillingly tense!’ – CE 95

Situated in the Karoo, Sutherland’s cold, continental climate gives the vines a deep dormancy period, offering maximum restoration and allowing the berries to ripen evenly and slowly. The climate and high altitude imbue the wine with a deep core of dark, concentrated fruit, balanced by vibrant acidity and a firm tannic structure. The Karoo Syrah 2022 is 30% whole-bunch fermented and raised in older oak. Classic and ‘thrillingly tense’, says Christian Eedes, drink it in 3-15 years. Limited quantities available.

Tasting notes

Kruger Family Wines Karoo Syrah 2022

'The nose is initially rather brooding showing smoky reduction, black berries, earth, fynbos and pepper although prettier notes of violets and orange emerge with time in glass. The palate is thrillingly tense – pure fruit, tingly acidity and a saline finish. Lean and austere but in an entirely fascinating way. Alc: 13%.'Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

'Natural ferment, 30% wholebunch, from Karoo-Sutherland vines, ‘highest & coldest in Cape’. Gorgeous, subtle perfume followed by palate with Kruger’s signature restraint, subtlety & elegance combined with red & darker fruit charm. Fine but firm structural balance; good dry & persistent length. Just 13% alc.'Platter’s Guide, 4*(93/100)
