‘You would be hard-pressed to pack more adventure into one life!’ note the brothers, regaling the adventures of their great-grandfather. Born in Kentucky, he ran away from home at 11 years old, rode with the Texas Rangers and eventually became a medical doctor. He moved to Cape Town after the war and opened up a medical practice in 1902. However, wine farming and winemaking were at the heart of his endeavours, leading to the creation of the Stellenbosch Farmers Winery, as well as the legendary Chateau Libertas! A recent tasting of the 1957 demonstrated once more that it is one of the greatest SA wines in existence today. Charles lived steadfastly by his motto: ‘Ne cede malis’ – ‘Do not give in to adversity.’

‘A serious wine … with ageing potential’ – PG
Wine Cellar is proud to offer a brilliant Bordeaux-styled blend from Stellenbosch vintners, Pierre and JP Winshaw. With a focus on sustainability, regenerative farming and a polyculture environment, the brothers honour their pioneering great-grandfather with this Cab-based blend from the 2019 vintage.
The Charles Winshaw 2019 is 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc as well as 11% Merlot and Malbec, sourced from their own farm and matured for 20 months in oak barrels. If you enjoy classic Cabernet cassis, graphite and bright red and black fruit, you'll love this! Slow to evolve, the wine has impressive restraint and freshness with dry, pointed tannins.
With well-integrated oak adding gravitas to this small-batch Stellenbosch red, Charles Winshaw 2019 promises a long life ahead – it’s a cellar-worthy wine that punches well above its weight at R340.
