The 2021 Pinot Noir Reserve from Kara-Tara continues to be unlike any other Pinot on the local market. The Platter’s 5-star maiden release resembled a ‘youthful Gevrey-Chambertin’, according to Greg Sherwood MW, and it sold out in record time last year! This super-limited Pinot is made from a single vineyard in the Overberg by the talented Rüdger van Wyk. It’s slow to unfurl on the nose, showing complex aromatics of black cherry and wild strawberry laced with black tea, earth, and tobacco leaf – with wonderful umami notes that carry through to the palate. The tannins are fine and the finish long, demanding your attention from start to finish.

Focusing on cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for his Kara-Tara label, Rüdger burst onto the scene when he won the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year award in 2018. Now the winemaker at Stark-Condé, he continues to produce wines of purity, place, and understated power. The 2021 Pinot Noir Reserve sees 30% whole bunch, which adds freshness and depth, while the shale soils impart aromatic complexity. It spends 12 months in French oak, of which 20% is new.

‘From a single vineyard in the Overberg, 160m above sea level, this Pinot Noir immediately draws you in with its nuances of black cherry, wild strawberry and black tea leaf, with hints of umami from start to finish. The wine is tightly knit and laced with tobacco leaf and savoury freshness. It’s layered with complex aromatics of lavender, violets, blood orange and attractive spice.
