‘Now is the Time to Drink BARBERA from Piedmont’ – Wine Enthusiast

Dear *|FNAME|*,

After our Piedmont Party at A Tavola two weekends ago, Wine Cellar is happy to shine the light on must-have affordable reds from Piedmont, made from the Barbera grape. They're smooth, fresh, medium to full-bodied and go with just about every dish you can think of!

Lovers of Piedmont ‘owe it to themselves to check out the region’s Dolcetto and Barbera bottlings’, asserts Antonio Galloni from Vinous. Today we’re offering four Barbera d’Albas from GD Vajra, Marengo, Pio Cesare and Giulia Negri. These are from older vines, traditionally planted just below the Nebbiolo on slightly warmer sites to temper Barbera’s famous acidity.

‘Now is the Time to Drink BARBERA from Piedmont’ – Wine Enthusiast

‘The top Barberas especially … are finely-crafted, world-class wines that no longer need to stand in the shadow of the more famous Piedmontese reds.’
– Wine Enthusiast

Barbera is normally harvested between the early-maturing Dolcetto and the late-ripening Nebbiolo, and stylistically it lies between the two. It’s a juicy, more muscular wine with amazing acidity and silken, earthy undertones. Though super appealing young, the best Barberas age gracefully.

‘Barolo and Barbaresco get the lion’s share of the attention in Piedmont, but the best Dolcettos, Barberas and Nebbiolos reflect the same values that make Piedmont’s top wines so compelling.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Versatile and smartly priced, these four Barberas are an ideal introduction to Piedmont’s ‘wine of the people’.

Tasting notes

GD Vajra Barbera d'Alba 2022

'The G.D. Vajra 2022 Barbera d'Alba is a nicely concentrated effort with dark cherry fruit, blackberry and cinnamon-like sensations from the grape skins. With that extra density comes extra fruit weight and a powerful 15% alcohol content. The wine does carry muscle for sure, but the results are firm and tight.' – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 90/100

Marengo Barbera d'Alba Pugnane 2021

'Shows depth, beginning with the color, along with flavors of plum, black cherry, loam and a touch of charred oak. Fluid, gliding easily to the long finish. Drink now through 2026.' – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 90/100

Pio Cesare Barbera d'Alba 2021

'A lovely and fresh barbera with crushed raspberries, blueberries and crushed stones. Medium body. Fine tannins and a bright finish. A firmness and focus to this. Drink now.' – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 91/100
