For decades, the iconic Peyraud family have made a rosé that’s considered the best in the appellation – and it's one of Wine Cellar’s favourites to import and share with South Africa. The 2022 Rosé is a ‘classic Bandol’, writes Yohan Castaing of the Wine Advocate. Grapefruit, florals, citrussy acidity and a creamy, red-fruit driven mid-palate make this lovely to behold now, but it should really light up in the next three to seven years. At a vertical tasting of the estate’s wines, Jancis Robinson MW noted that the 1988 Tempier Rosé was ‘probably the finest pink wine I have ever drunk … creamy and suggestive of macerated rose petals but with a bone-dry finish’.

Tempier’s 2020 Bandol Rouge ‘Lulu & Lucien’ is a blend of 75% Mourvèdre, 14% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, and 2% Carignan. It’s everything Bandol Rouge stands for, starting with pure black fruit, smoke, black olives, florals, and dried herbs, then moving with amazing energy and depth to a graphite, stony minerality, a fleshy palate and tangy acidity. Those who enjoy the wines of the Rhône will love this.

Located in the heart of Bandol, on the Côte d’Azur, Domaine Tempier was established during the reign of Louis XV (1715-74). The house was built in 1834 and the estate gained recognition in 1885 after winning its first gold medal. Domaine Tempier has been run by the Peyraud family since 1936, and their 38 hectares are spread over several parcels planted on steep, sun-drenched slopes that face the sea.

Tempier Bandol Rosé 2022 – 55% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 20% Cinsault

‘A classic Bandol, the 2022 Bandol Rose reveals stunning aromas of grapefruit, spring flowers, guava, lemon and iodine. The wine on the palate is medium to full-bodied, combining a fleshy core of fruit and racy acids with impressive substance on the finish. Tempier Bandol Rouge Lulu & Lucien 2020, 750ml & 1500ml

‘Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Bandol Cuvee Classique had been blended the week before my visit. Already showing classic notes of tree bark and truffle layered against cherries and raspberries and a touch of olive, it looks relatively precocious.
