'Mind blowing' Charles Winshaw 2017 – 96 pts Greg Sherwood MW

Dear *|FNAME|*,

'The first glass was delicious, but the last glass was mind blowing'
– Greg Sherwood MW

Dr Charles Winshaw was a pioneering figure in the South African wine industry, and his legacy continues today through the Winshaw brothers, Pierre and JP. The Charles Winshaw 2017 showcases ‘classical Stellenbosch Cabernet notes’ and the ‘2017 vintage’s weightless concentration’, enthuses Greg Sherwood. It is ‘fabulously balanced with ... poise and harmony’. Where else could you find a wine from such a brilliant vintage at this price?

Winshaw Family Vineyards Charles Winshaw 2017

The Charles Winshaw 2017 is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon based blend that’s slow to evolve and begging to be cellared. It offers deep, dark fruit and elegant structure, boasting impressive restraint and quiet power on the palate. Having spent 24 months in French barrels (63% new), the well-integrated oak adds further gravitas and cellar-worthy credentials. The Winshaw brothers grow some of the finest grapes in Stellenbosch, and all the fruit for this wine was sourced from their Klein Welmoed farm.

‘You would be hard-pressed to pack more adventure into one life!’ note the brothers, regaling the adventures of their great-grandfather. Wine farming and winemaking were at the heart of his latter endeavours, leading to the creation of the Stellenbosch Farmers Winery, as well as the legendary Chateau Libertas! A recent tasting of the 1957 demonstrated once more that it is one of the greatest SA wines in existence today. Charles lived steadfastly by his motto, ‘Ne cede malis’‘Do not give in to adversity.’

The small-batch Charles Winshaw 2017 echoes the past, continuing a legacy of great wine farming and visionary winemaking.

Tasting notes

Winshaw Family Vineyards Charles Winshaw 2017

'A serious blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec and 4% Merlot, I tasted this wine over the course of three days to assess its true fine wine potential. On opening, the aromatics showed classical Stellenbosch Cabernet notes of sweet tobacco, tannery leather, black currant, black plum, chai tea and freshly tilled earth notes. The palate was full and glycerol with creamy soft sweet tannins, layers of black and blue berry fruits with the classic 2017 vintage weightless concentration. Fabulously balanced with classical poise and harmony. But on day two and day three, the wine shed some of its initial sapidity and sweet tea leaf and tobacco notes to reveal an incredible purity, depth of blue and black berry fruits and a seamlessly vibrant cherry-laden tangy intensity on the finish. I am so pleased I gave this wine the time and space to really show its blue-blooded pedigree. As the cliché goes, the first glass was delicious, but the last glass was mind blowing. Track this beauty down if you can as the R300 local price tag (£16-£18) is ridiculously cheap.' – 96/100, Greg Sherwood MW
