Domaine Vacheron: The very definition of Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc

Dear *|FNAME|*,

'As long as you have a Vacheron in your glass you won't get disappointed.'Wine Advocate

A fortnight's trip to Sancerre, whilst studying in the Loire, was enough to make me fall in love with the region and their wines (and goat’s cheese). The fact that you can taste the terroir so clearly when going through their single vineyards is enough to make a convert out of anyone – Sauvignon Blanc fan or not!

'[Vacheron is] surely one of the highlights in the Sancerrois,' says the Wine Advocate. Now run by cousins Jean-Dominique and Jean-Laurent Vacheron, they make benchmark Loire Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from some of the best sites in the appellation – farmed biodynamically since 2005. The Wine Advocate continues, 'the cousins demonstrate that the Sancerrois is no less fascinating than the Côte d'Or.'

Their straight 2020 Sancerre is the perfect introduction. 'Most producers can only dream of an 'entry-level' wine that's this good,' writes Vinous. Their single-vineyard wines are all fermented separately in large wooden foudres. Both the 2019 Les Romains (where everything started in 1968) and the 2019 Chambrates, from the limestone and red clay plateau, show another level of intensity, power and, of course, salinity and mineralité.

Made from Pinot Noir, the 2018 Vacheron Sancerre Rouge is a finely-knit red made by white wine specialists. It has the same finesse and effortlessness of their Sauvignons, with the added stony flintiness of their terroir. Of the 2018, Antonio Galloni from Vinous writes: 'I was especially struck by the red Sancerre, maybe because I was not expecting them to be so flat-out delicious.'

Tasting notes

Vacheron, Sancerre 2020

'Most producers can only dream of an 'entry-level' wine that's this good. The 2020 Sancerre is a touch flinty on the nose right now, and offers pure fruit reminiscent of gooseberry, nettle and boxwood. This has a certain ease to it, conveying a mellow texture within its light-bodied frame. Drink 2021-2028.'Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, 90/100

Vacheron, Sancerre Les Romains 2019

'From 20- to 50-year-old vines in a south/southwest-facing vineyard, the 2019 Sancerre Les Romains offers a pure yet intense and iodine-scented bouquet of shells and oysters along with algae aromas. Full-bodied, rich and powerful on the palate, this is an elegant, refined, balanced and refreshingly mineral Les Romains with a long, juicy, pretty aromatic, seriously structured and persistent salty finish with stimulating grip. Impressive, as always. Drink 2021-2036.'Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 94/100

'The 2019 Sancerre Les Romains is made in a supple, full style with a sense of lightness. It has the balance of a gymnast and a fine texture. The satisfying, mouthwatering, refined finish features delicate fragrances of chamomile and lemon. Drink 2021-2029.'Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, 92/100

Vacheron, Sancerre Chambrates 2019

'Delicate and elegant, with ripe, bright fruit aromas and earthy as well as orange notes on the intense but refined nose, the 2019 Sancerre Chambrates is a tight, intense and tensioned wine whose vitality, finesse and elegance combined with a dense fruit core and sustainable mineral grip reminds me of dry limestone Riesling crus from Alsace, Pfalz or the hilly lands of the Wonnegau in Rheinhessen, Germany. This is a beautiful vin de terroir. Highly stimulating and with lingering salinity, this is a Sancerre ready to be served now and over this decade. The grapes were picked between September 12th and October 4th. Drink 2021-2037.'Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 94/100

'A mouthwatering style that's starting to settle into the bottle, shaking off its primary excitedness. The 2019 Sancerre Chambrates is very satisfying, lick-your-lips stuff. It provides a seamless texture, delicate nectarine and citrus-like fruit flavors and, crucially, harmony. Drink 2021-2028.'Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, 94/100

Vacheronn, Sancerre Rouge 2018

'The 2018 Sancerre Rouge is a very pretty, mid-weight wine that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Crushed flowers, spice, mint and red/purplish berry fruit are all finely knit. Silky tannins give the 2018 quite a bit of immediacy and overall appeal. Drink 2020-2026.'Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 90/100
