The Reserve Red 2019 is among only 22 reds to be rated 95+ by Neal, while Tim Atkin goes a step further and calls it one of the greatest red wines in South Africa, awarding it 98+! The Reserve Red is 100% Syrah, grown sustainably from a single parcel on Reyneke. It gets better with every release and is probably the most complete and typical expression of Polkadraai Syrah – capturing all the amazing elements of the region’s now-famous soils. Seductively aromatic with savoury spice and wonderful depth of fruit, it’s charming yet powerful. ‘A real doppelgänger for a Northern Rhône,’ says Neal.
Sustainability is poised to be the most important trend for fine wine in the coming decade. This takes commitment and time, and no other producer in South Africa has shown more commitment or put in more time than Reyneke. Their aim is not just sustainability, but self-sufficiency. Twenty years of biodynamic farming created the perfect balance between vine and environment, and this has culminated in this wine of excellence. The immensely charactered Reserve Red 2019 is a trailblazer not only as a biodynamic wine, but also in highlighting the incredible potential of the Polkadraai region in Stellenbosch.
