Mosel Riesling from Clemens Busch: 'Germany's foremost biodynamic pioneer' – Vinous

Dear *|FNAME|*,

'Riesling is the greatest white wine grape,' writes Jancis Robinson, and the ultimate expressions hail from the steep-sloped Mosel region in Germany. Some of the finest, most pure examples of dry (trocken) Mosel Riesling come from the hands of 5th-generation growers – Clemens and Rita Busch. Clemens is 'Germany's foremost biodynamic pioneer' according to Vinous, and has gained a cult-following for his natural, but precise German winemaking.

Most of Clemens Busch's production comes from the famous Grosses Gewächs vineyard, Pündericher Marienburg – 80% of which is planted to old vines. Their vineyards are based on 3 types of slatered, blue and grey – each imparting different characteristics and styling. All these Rieslings have the typical Mosel 'lightness of being'. They are concentrated and elegant but electric!

As specialists in dry Mosel Riesling, you can buy confidently across the Clemens Busch range. David Schildknecht from Vinous agrees, stating that he has 'great admiration' for the 'dry side of the Busch portfolio'. Generally speaking, wines from red slate (roten schiefer) have incredible aromatic intensity with yellow fruit and a softer finish. Grey slate (grauen schiefer) gives notes of dried herbs, with a stony, mineral quality to the wine, whilst wines from blue slate (blauen schiefer) show floral, smoky and spicy characteristics.

As always, the Clemens Busch release spans at least 3 vintages. 2018 had a healthy crop and the wines are rich and powerful. 2019 was tougher in the vineyard and resulted in a smaller crop, but wines with great tension. The 2020s are crisp and more sleek than the 2018s, but not quite as powerful as the 2019s.

Tasting notes

Clemens Busch, Riesling Trocken 2020

'Their entry-level dry Riesling is made up of their declassified ‘Grand Cru’ vineyards on the Marienburg, as well as some younger vines in their secondary vineyards of Pündericher Goldlay and Pündericher Rosenberg. It is fermented with indigenous yeasts in 60% used, 10-hectolitre barrels and 40% stainless steel. The nose is floral and waxy with exotic spice and dried herbs. Light to medium-bodied at 10.5% alc., there is a lot of yellow-fruited concentration on the palate with a citrus-edged acidity. The finish is stony, smoky and saline. At only R250, this offers spectacular value!'Jolette Steyn, Wine Cellar (March 2022)

Clemens Busch, Riesling Vom Grauen Schiefer 2018

'Busch’s 2018 Riesling Vom Grauen Schiefer is the purest and most stony-flavored of the trio wines from red-blue-gray slate soils. The Riesling from gray slate is almost unwelcoming in its ascetic, stony, crunchy, lemony and yeasty purity, which might be challenging for beginners looking for fruit but is surely exciting for true Riesling freaks. The nose is definitely complex and develops with air, becoming finer and slightly more fruity. It’s definitely a wine for nerds, though. The palate is very elegant and refined, revealing a full-bodied palate with rich, intense and concentrated yet also juicy fruit and remarkable complexity on the sustainable and mineral finish. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 3019 in July 2020. 2020 - 2030.'Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 91/100

Clemens Busch, Riesling Vom Roten Schiefer 2019

'Bottled in early September, the Pündericher 2019 Riesling Vom Roten Schiefer opens with a very elegant and aromatic bouquet of ripe stone fruits (mirabelles) that are perfectly intertwined with the crystalline and crunchy expression of red, iron-rich slate. Juicy, piquant and very salty on the palate, this is a pure and fresh yet intense, structured and crystalline Riesling with a charming finish, remarkable terroir expression and just 11.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. 2023 - 2035.'Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 93/100

Clemens Busch, Riesling Vom Blauen Schiefer 2019

'The 2019 Riesling Vom Blauen Schiefer is pure, fine and crunchy on the aromatic yet slate-driven and elegant nose. Round and lush on the palate, this is a fine, intense and concentrated dry Riesling with a complex and powerful finish. It comes from old vines that are the source for the Fairly GG as well. 2024 - 2040.'Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, 93/100
