Tokara named Winery of the Year! James Pietersen, 11 December 2020

SA’s best wines in 2020

Tokara’s 2017 Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon has just been named SA’s best red wine in 2020 and the 2018 De Morgenzon Reserve Chenin Blanc won the spot for best overall white.

During the course of 2020, the Winemag panel reviewed 927 wines across 20 categories in various reports sponsored by Prescient. Tasted blind over multiple days, these are some of the most rigorous tastings in SA.

Of the winners, one of our highlights is the B Vintners 2018 Liberté Pinotage. This wine is redefining the Pinotage narrative and is a revelation with its elegance and energy. Another wine which must be mentioned is the unique Flying Cloud 2018 Sovereign of the Seas. This vibrant, spicy and lively Pinot is from a well-established vineyard in the amazing high-altitude wine region of Outeniqua. For something different these are well worth seeking out.

Tokara: Winery of the Year 2020

Tokara has earned a Top 10 spot in every Winemag panel report they entered this year. Their consistency is particularly impressive and the award for 2020 Winery of the Year is well-deserved.

It has been one hell of a year, but these are seriously good wines and, tasted without seeing the label and any brand prejudice, here’s a chance to get some of the best that SA has to offer.

Tasting notes

Tokara, Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot. Matured for 22 months in French oak, 44% new. Beautiful aromatics of red and black berries, some pleasant herbal character and a hint of vanilla. The palate is full bodied with dense fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Possessing layers of flavour, the finish long and dry, this is a very stylish offering. – Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines in South Africa 2020 Report, 95/100

De Morgenzon, Reserve Chenin Blanc 2018

Grapes from a 1972 vineyard. Spontaneously fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak, 20% new. A hint of reduction before citrus and stone fruit, some yeasty complexity plus hints of vanilla and spice. The palate is rich and creamy yet also possessing vibrant acidity, the finish is long and savoury. – Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines in South Africa 2020 Report, 95/100

B Vintners, Liberté 2018

20% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 18 months in older French oak. An enticing nose with notes of red currant, cherry, pomegranate and musk. The palate is light-bodied and energetic – pure fruit, fresh acidity and crunchy tannins. This is precisely made, being wonderfully clean and linear. – Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines in South Africa 2020 Report, 94/100

Flying Cloud, Sovereign of the Seas 2018

20% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 20 months in two 300-litre barrels, one new and one third-fill. A pronounce and very attractive note of rose-like perfume as well as red berries, white pepper and other spice. The palate has succulent fruit, bright acidity and powdery tannins. Particularly pure and poised. – Winemag Prescient Top 20 Wines in South Africa 2020 Report, 94/100
