‘The 2021 Langhe Freisa Kyè is redolent of black cherry, herbs, licorice and spice. The Vajra children are picking this fruit 15-20 days earlier than their parents did, a sign of the new generation taking on a more prominent role at the winery. These transitions take time. The old Kyè, the wine made my parents Aldo and Milena Vajra, was one the most distinctive wines in Piedmont. This version is good, but not anywhere as distinctive. I am reminded of the old adage: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." 2024-2033’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93/100
‘The G.D. Vajra 2021 Langhe Freisa Kyè has a delicate bouquet with intertwined berry and floral elements that could recall Japanese cherry blossom or even a Sicilian almond blossom. Beyond that, the wine offers an interlude of fresh blue fruits with elderberry and juniper. It shows terrific freshness and more tart flavors to close. 2024-2028’ – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 92/100
‘It doesn’t smell of much but delivers a right hook of powerful, dry, enthusiastically rustic tannins which feel a bit like licking the deeply fissured, rough bark of an old, old tree. The tannins tangle through an explosion of dark, tamari-umami fruit. Liquorice root, elder berries, sloe, thyme and sage. It has a medicinal bitterness and masses of wild character. It needs food – black-olive tapenade, game-liver pâté and a radicchio salad should do it. 2024-2028’ – Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, 16/20

Producer information | GD Vajra estate is named after Giuseppe Domenico Vajra who founded the estate in 1972. Located in the highest village of Barolo, the vineyards are run by Giuseppe's son Aldo and his family. The vineyards sit at high altitudes of up to 400 metres, this creates thermal changes which ripen the fruit slowly and allow the concentration of noble and delicate aromas. GD Vjara have been pioneers of organic farming since 1971. |
