'Five different vineyards in Ceres, the Overberg and the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge make up the blend of this pan-regional Chardonnay. ‘Grapes from Shaw’s Mountain (Overberg), Ceres Plateau and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Aromatics are not surprisingly still rather primary at this stage with notes of lemon, orange, oatmeal and nutmeg while the palate has good depth of fruit matched by tangy acidity – big and generous, the end nicely dry. 'Inviting aromatics of vanilla, spice, nutmeg and cardomon with candied lemon rind and notes of peach, pears and dried fynbos. Wonderful fruit density and mid palate weight without lacking restraint. The oaking is perfectly judged and already well integrated giving way to notes of nutmeg, spice and a medium-to-full body weight. The finish is delicate, chalky and long with nuances of white florals and oak spice coming through on the end. | Producer information | Crystallum, based in Walker Bay, South Africa, is a family-run and privately-owned winery which began in 2007. Brothers Andrew and Peter-Allan are the third generation of Finlayson winemakers and sons of the man who pioneered Pinot Noir winemaking in the Hemel-en-Aarde region. They specialise in the Burgundian varieties, and follow a low intervention winemaking approach. Peter-Allan Finlayson is a leader in producing some of the finest modern-day SA Pinots.
