‘Ever the class act, Hamilton Russell's Chardonnay is in a rich vein of form right now. Using only 5% malolactic because of the warmer year, this is fresh, layered and detailed, with perfumed 23% new wood, notes of brioche and lemon butter and a stylish, stony finish. Concentrated without being heavy in any way. 2023-29’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 95/100

‘Opening to a nose of bright lemon and peach yogurt with hints of banana, the 2022 Chardonnay is fresh and citrus-laden. Medium-bodied and with 13.2% alcohol, the palate is fresh, balanced and spicy with succulent apple essence before swinging to show an elegant floral notion that finishes fresh and complex. This Chardonnay was barrel fermented and aged in 23% new French oak. Give it a try! 2023-2035’ – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 94/100

‘96% of the wine was fermented in a combination of 228- and 300-litre barrels (of which 23% was new) and 4% in foudre before maturation lasting nine months. The nose is still rather primary with top notes of blossom and herbs before pear, lime and lemon plus the merest hint of oak while the palate is light and fresh with a resolutely dry finish.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100

‘A tight, minerally wine with classic Hamilton Russell Vineyards length and complexity. Unusually prominent pear and lime fruit aromas and flavours are brought beautifully into focus by a tight line of bright natural acid and a long, dry minerality. An elegant, yet textured and intense wine with a strong personality of both place and vintage.’ – Winemaker

Producer information Tim Hamilton Russell founded Hamilton Russell Vineyards in 1975 when he purchased a 170 hectare undeveloped property and turned it into one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa. He was one of the trailblazing producers of Pinot Noir and certainly the driving force behind the birth of Pinot Noir in the greater Walker Bay district. His son Anthony Hamilton Russell, the current second generation owner, took over in 1991 and purchased the property from his father in 1994. He has made his mark both internationally and locally with the Estate producing some of the country’s finest Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.
