‘The 2018 Marienburg Beerenauslese Fahrlay (from vat 1887) offers a clear, refined and intense bouquet of perfectly ripe stone fruits intertwined with an elegant, very delicate slate aroma. Playful and filigreed on the palate, this is a beautifully refined and noble BA with a crystalline, sustainable structure and lingering, almost mouthwatering salinity. ‘Dried mushroom and an ominously prickly combination of lemon peel and radish practically assault the nose, accompanied by scents of cinnamon-laced pear preserve that acquire prominence on a viscous, honeyed palate. A high-toned suggestion of poire distillate seems to quiet with aeration. While this shares with other nobly sweet Busch 2018s its overriding sense of sweetness, it manages to muster bright and animating counterpoint by way of fresh lemon and pineapple, with brown spices adding invigoration to a prodigious finish. Assuming that its volatility remains restrained and that the fungal aspects as well as overriding sweetness gradually recede, this may well impressively reward lovers of the genre who have lots of patience. 2024-2048’ – David Schildknecht, Vinous
