‘The Pündericher 2018 Marienburg GG Fahrlay is the selection from 75+-year-old vines on blue slate that surround the Terrassen selection. The nose is pure, fresh and intense yet also very fine and complex, with perfectly ripe fruit and herbal and crunchy slate aromas. Lush and buoyant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, very elegant, refined and balanced yet intense, persistently fruity and slightly sweetish dry Riesling with fine acidity and a long, intense, slightly bitter yet tight and tensioned finish. 13.5% alcohol. ‘Heliotrope, hazelnut, white peach, apple and wet stone combine for a striking aromatic and palate impression. The feel is full and surprisingly creamy, but freshness of fruit – with lime joining in – serves for animation and outright thirst-quenching. Lightly incisive lime peel and fresh ginger, along with piquant pit and seed, invigorate on a finish that nonetheless also perpetuates a subtly soothing hint of creaminess and admirable transparency to wet stone underpinnings. 'Animating nose of ripe green fruit with apple leading the olfactory charge, a fine notion of citrus fruit completes the fragrance. Opposites attract on the palate with the taste of juicy grapefruit on the one side, a dusty mineral component on the other. Producer information Clemens is the 5th-generation winemaker at his family estate and began using organic practices in 1984. Later a pioneer in biodynamics, Clemens Busch is now a role model for natural, but precise German winemaking. Unlike most of the Mosel region, however, Clemens focuses on dry, elegant Rieslings that express the complex terroir of this historic region. Their unique soils in the town of Pündericherallow them to produce many iterations of the Riesling grape. Clemens Busch is based on the 3 types of slate – red, blue and grey – each imparting different characteristics and styling.
