'One of a tiny number of varietal Mourvèdres in the Cape, this is certainly not short of tannin or structure, having spent a month on skins. Chewy, savoury, youthful and intense, with damson, tar and fynbos notes and subtle oak. Drink 2022-26.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2021, 91/100

'Mourvedre shows a lot of variation from vintage to vintage reflecting the characteristics of the year nicely in the glass. As 2018 a drier vintage the savoury notes on the wine is more prominent to me but I also smell floral notes as well as variety of red berries. On the pallet the wine has a prominent tannin that covers your whole pallet and has a lovely length. I would be inclined to enjoy this red with a red meat on the bone prepared over fire. Producer information Pioneering biodynamic winemaking in South Africa with their lunar cycles, deep-bed system, worm house and portable chicken coop, Waterkloof are unassumingly elegant and sophisticated in their approach to farming and winemaking. The Somerset West estate places a strong emphasis on minimal intervention and gentle handling to preserve the natural 'circle of life' in all areas on the farm, and this is reflected in their wines, which show a commonality of sophisticated restraint. Their white wines are particularly food-friendly and have received high acclaim internationally from critics such as Jamie Goode and the Independent Wine Review.
