Van Loggerenberg Wines Trust your Gut Chenin Blanc 2021 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Western Cape
R370
‘About 60% of the grapes for this superb wine were sourced from the Paardeberg and 40% from the Polkadraai Hills ward in Stellenbosch. The aromatics display a notable crushed gravel minerality with hints of struck-match reduction before notes of pineapple, ripe pears, white peach, wet straw and dried herb nuances. As always, the palate is beautifully intense and concentrated possessing impressive phenolic structure together with a bright vibrant acidity. It is striking how Lukas harnesses such power, intensity and depth of flavour at a modest 13% alcohol, reaffirming his real mastery of the Chenin Blanc grape. Drink this on release or cellar for 8 to 10+ years.’ – Greg Sherwood MW, 96/100
'60% of grapes sourced from Paardeberg and 40% Polkadraai Hills. Struck-match reduction before pear, peach, dried herbs and some earthiness – all rather subtle. The palate possesses impressive structure – concentrated fruit, punchy acidity and just a little phenolic grip to the finish. Good depth of flavour and altogether rather forceful despite an alcohol of just 13%.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 94/100
'Yields were down on 2021, alas, but the quality of this Western Cape Chenin Blanc, made with a 60/40 blend of fruit from the Paardeberg and the Polkadraai Hills, is as good as ever. More open and approachable than Kameraderie, this remains a granite-driven style, with white flowers, pear and citrus notes and a hint of stone fruit sweetness. 2023-29' – Tim Atkin, MW, South African Special Report 2022, 93/100
'Blend of Polkadraai Hills & Swartland chenin, 2021 captures purity, steeliness with textural breadth, forming tantalising whole. Spice & light honey notes provide further dimension, endless length. Lovely potential.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)
‘The 2021 Trust Your Gut is a pure Chenin Blanc named after Loggerenberg's approach in terms of when to pick. It comes from the same vineyard as the Graft in Polkedraai (60%) and also in Paardeberg. Crops were lower this year, small berries but with thick skins, so he did not have to press too hard to obtain texture. Raised on its lees for nine months, the 2021 has a distinctly silvery gold hue. The nose is quite intense and pithy - peach skin, nectarine, lanolin and melted wax. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, wonderfully oily in texture with dried peach, orange rind and light nutty notes on the finish. Excellent. 2023-2029’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 91/100

Producer information | Van Loggerenberg Wines was started by Lukas and wife Roxanne with their first vintage in 2016. The 2019 vintage is the fourth release for Lukas – a rising star, Young Gun and 2018 Young Winemaker of the Year by Tim Atkin. Lukas grew up in Rawsonville in the Breederivier valley, and was always surrounded by vineyards and wine. His wines are produced in the Devon Valley and the grapes are sourced from Stellenbosch, Paarl and Swartland. Each wine and it’s name has a specific story behind it and his wines have become extremely sought-after. ‘Pretty damn hot,’ says Christian Eedes raving about his previous releases. |
