‘As its name suggests, Ignis uses grapes from a 2.4-hectare, north-facing site on warmer decomposed granite soils. Pale, ethereal and very delicate for a 2022 red, it combines the Burgundian 113 and 115 clones to brilliant effect. Focused, energetic and tangy, with savoury tannins, pomegranate and wild strawberry flavours, nuanced and a real sense of energy, vibrancy and purpose. Incredibly long. 2024-32’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 96/100

‘Grapes from a Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley vineyard planted in 2008 on granite. Alluring aromatics of red cherry, wild strawberry, fynbos and spice while the palate is light but detailed. An elegant vintage with zesty acidity and powdery tannins. Alc: 13.5%’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100

‘Registered single-vineyard, as rest, all reflecting individual terroir; same cellar treatment, hand harvested, wild ferment, reds 11 months in barrel , only difference is portion new oak, here 33% Upper Hemel-en-Aarde’s decomposed granite gives minerality, an earthy note, but there’s fruit aplenty, red berries, oak a subtle savoury note, tannins harmonious. Exudes poise & refinement. Great ageability, as for 2021’ – Platter’s Guide, 5*(95/100)

Producer information Hannes Storm has spent nearly 2 decades in the pursuit of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay perfection. No single SA winemaker is more dedicated or focused on growing and vinifying Pinot and it shows. After 12 years as winemaker at Hamilton Russell, he started his eponymous label Storm Wines in 2012, and has since been focusing on the best-suited sites for this challenging variety. The remarkable Storm trio – the Ignis, Ridge and Vrede Pinot Noirs each come from one of the three appellations in the Hemel-en-Aarde. Storm Wines is the only producer with Pinots from each of these three appellations. If you have not tried these, you are missing out on South Africa’s benchmark Pinot Noirs.
