Roger Perrin: Must-have Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge

Roger Perrin

Must-have Côtes-du-Rhône Rouge

Not all Côtes-du-Rhône reds are created equal, and Roger Perrin’s Grenache-led 2022 Côtes-du-Rhône Fruité sits comfortably amongst the very best. Dubbed a new star in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation by the Wine Advocate, this is a producer to watch.

This medium-bodied blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault displays spiced bright red and black fruit that you can almost bite into, classic garrigue and dried herbs, and a stony minerality. Pure and layered on the palate, it’s sumptuous without being over-ripe and finishes with a good tannic grip. Grab a glass – it will be smashing with anything you put on the braai.

Roger Perrin: Must-have Côtes du Rhône Rouge

The small, family-owned domaine is situated in the Vaucluse region between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the small town of Orange in the Southern Rhône, about 20km north of Avignon.

With the drought in 2022, vignerons in the Rhône were tested. Thankfully, Perrin’s old Grenache vines, with their deep and extensive root systems, handled the tough conditions well and produced wines of very good quality.

Roger Perrin took over the running of the property from his father-in-law in 1969 and established his eponymous domaine in 1980. The baton was then passed to his son Luc, and today the domaine is run by Roger’s daughter and grandson, Véronique and Xavier. They work the vineyards in a sustainable and organic manner, looking after 40 ha across 70 different plots around their home. The average vine age is 60 years old, with some as old as 100 years.
