Tim Atkin SA Report
‘Grapes from a Simonsberg vineyard planted in 1980. Fermented in a combination of concrete egg and barrel, partially new. Citrus, peach, hay, herbs and ginger and other spice on the nose. The palate has a dense core of fruit, bracing acidity and a pithy finish. Direct and harmonious. Alc: 12.95%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

'Rock of Eye is a new brand from vastly experienced winemaker Coenie Snyman, proving that there is life beyond Rust en Vrede. Refreshingly elegant in style, it has a frame of 20% new French oak, layers of citrus, patisserie and aniseed and a long, mineral-rich finish. 2024-27' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2024, 92/100

‘The nose begins with elegant honeysuckle aromas followed by ripe melon and nectarine aromas. The nose finishes with the richer honeycomb, orange zest flavours while cream and cardamon lingers in the background. The palate is full of melon and nectarines with an underlying fresh zest. It is satisfyingly refreshing and elegant with a lingering spicy finish. As the maiden vintage of this wine, it is showing well in its youth, and curious to follow how the wine will evolve with maturation.’ – Winemaker

Producer information Winemaker Coenie Snyman founded Rock of Eye in order to create a portfolio of investment-grade wines. The name Rock of Eye is derived from the combination of nature and intuition. Coenie believes in creating wines with as little human interference as possible. His focus is on Chenin Blanc’s from vines planted in 1980 on the single site slopes of Simonsberg while his Cinsault’s are from low lying, bushvine sandy soils at the edge of False Bay. Coenie was a recipient of the 2009 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year award and is also a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild.
