Querciabella Chianti Classico 2020 Magnum Bottle size: 1500ml
Italy, Tuscany
R995
‘Pure fruit on the nose, with rose hips, cherries, blueberries, lemon leaves and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with tangy acidity and firm tannins. Vibrant and elegant, with such purity of fruit. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling, 93/100
‘The 2020 Chianti Classico is impressive and pure, with ripe black cherry, a hint of blue fruit, violets, and sweet herbs. It is medium to full-bodied, with supple fruit throughout, fine grained tannins, and a polished feel. It displays fresh acidity without any harsh edges, but it is mouthwatering and compels returning for more. This beautiful wine from Querciabella is drinking well now, and I imagine will continue to improve over the coming decade or more.’ – Jeb Dunnuck, 93/100
‘With an annual production of approximately 150,000 bottles, this is Querciabella’s calling card – and an impressive one at that. It also gives an incisive panoramic shot of the Chianti Classico region as it's a blend of estate vineyards in three different subzones. Bright and fresh, the 2020 annata emerges energetically out of the glass with exuberant and pure red cherry and currants. It gains intrigue with stylish touches of mocha, tarragon and truffles. It's full and vigorous yet light on its feet thanks to radiant acidity, while well-formed tannins lend just the right amount of chew. As suave as it is characterful. 2023-2031’ – Michaela Morris, Decanter, 92/100
‘A ripe, polished version, whose cherry, currant, earth and wild herb flavors are wrapped up in a profile that gains density as it plays out on the palate. Best from 2023 through 2032.’ – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 89/100

Producer information | The story of Querciabella began in 1974 when Giuseppe ‘Pepito’ Castiglioni purchased a single hectare of vineyards on a Tuscan hillside. He was an industrial entrepreneur by trade but his dreams and passions were in producing wine. In the mid-1990s Pepito’s son, Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni, took over the vineyards and took Querciabella’s reputation to new heights. He saw to it that Querciabella was one of the first wineries in Italy to convert to organic viticulture and was a pioneer in his biodynamic approach. Sebastiano’s passion for animal rights also led to the vegan certification of Querciabella. Today Querciabella’s vineyards span more than 100 hectares, located in Chianti Classico and Maremma and are planted with all the grape varieties that Pepito only dreamed of when purchasing that first hectare of vineyards. |
